Gallery 195 of Boerne is sponsoring a meet the artists reception from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, where guests can enjoy a glass of wine – and good conversation.
The featured artists will be Robert and Jill Pankey.
Robert Pankey put himself through school selling pen and ink prints of the local pubs at Texas A&M University.
Although he began his commercial career as an artist while pursuing his college career, he has been creative all his life. Carving wooden decoys, creating graphic website images, playing music, and making homemade wine are all a part of his creative lifestyle.
Pankey enjoys painting wildlife and uses color to explore its essence. His bright, expressive color and exaggerated brush strokes give his paintings a contemporary feeling which is at home in any setting.
Pankey paints what he loves and tries to translate emotions and feelings into color, as well as communicate his individual interpretation of the subject.
When asked how long it takes to paint one of his paintings, he answers, “All my life!”
Jill Pankey is a former faculty member in the art department of Texas State University in San Marcos. She grew up in Del Rio on the Mexican border, and that influenced her passion for color in her paintings.
Working chiefly in oils and noted for experimenting with the theme of the aging female, Jill paints real women – inspired by her daughters and long-time friends. Her women display confidence, humor and flaws.
Jill’s attention-grabbing art chronicles life’s events that transpire around her. She presents women aging with passion and abandon. She believes age is not a number, but is what is in your head.
Although she is retired from teaching, she says, “On a good day, I’m 30!”
The first reaction one might have when viewing these artists’ collections is to the explosion of color, reminiscent of the Fauves. The Fauves, loosely translated to mean “wild beasts,” provided us the first major art movement of the 20th century, although just a blip in the timeline of art history.
Fauvists were earnest in their experimentation of new ways to express their emotional responses to their subject matters. Henri Matisse, father of Fauvism, filled his canvasses with layers of bold color and repetition of design.
