Boerne High running back TJ Dement said he was a little nervous before the start of last Friday’s state semifinals game against Tyler Chapel Hill in the Alamodome.
“I'm nervous before every game but this was a huge game so I had quite a few nerves but after that kickoff everything settled down,” he said.
Well, if Dement was nervous he certainly didn’t play like it. The junior ran for 179 yards on 23 carries and three TDs as the Greyhound went on to rout the Bulldogs, 35-0.
Just like Dement, Boerne hasn’t played nervous all year and that’s part of why they are 15-0.
While BHS has a perfect record, they didn’t play perfect in last Friday’s game, but the result was still a win for them, which showed they can beat teams even while making some mistakes.
The Greyhounds turned the ball over three times in the first half of Friday’s game with two fumbles and an interception but still took a 14-0 lead into intermission.
Chapel Hill almost cut the lead in half right before the half but fumbled at the BHS 1-yard line and Koen Wolff jumped on the loose ball to end the threat.
Boerne ended up with a shutout, it’s third of the year, with two coming in the playoffs. The Hounds blanked Memorial during the regular season (35-0) and then kept Port Lavaca Calhoun (51-0) and Chapel Hill (35-0) off the board.
The Bulldogs had several players go both ways and saw action on offense and defense and the Hounds just seemed to wear them down.
Hutson Hendrix said what wore Chapel Hill down faster was Boerne’s physical play.
“We were just playing together and were playing more physical than they were,” he said. “We pride ourselves on being more physical and outlasting them so we did.”
Hutson’s brother, Houston Hendrix said that was their goal, to tire out the Bulldogs.
“We were trying to (wear them out) and trying to get to that third and fourth quarter to run the ball and finish them off,” Houston said.
Houston chipped in on both sides of the ball and scored a touchdown to make it 14-0 early in the second. Later in the half, Houston came up with an interception to stopped a Bulldogs drive.
Defensively, Houston Hendrix, Charlie Stahl and Wolff intercepted passes for the Greyhound defense, while Wolff had two fumble recoveries.
Hutson Hendrix and Will French led the team with 13 tackles each, Stahl and Caleb Hamby recorded 10 tackles apiece, Wolff finished with 8 and Braden Bays had 7 stops.
Offensively, Jaxon Baize went 12 for 19 through the air for 147 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
Adam Hicks added 72 rushing yards on 14 carries, Braden Baize caught 6 passes for 78 yards and a score, while Brooks Perez caught 2 passes for 36 yards.
The two TD passes that Jaxon Baize tossed on Friday gives him 51 on the year.
Dement said it’s exciting to be playing in the state championship game.
“It means everything,” he said. “I’ve always dreamed of getting there.”
Hutson Hendrix said it means a lot to him.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” he said.
Houston Hendrix said he had a hard time expressing what it means to him.
“I can’t even put it into words, it’s so amazing getting to do this with my brother and all my friends and especially for my dad,” he said.
