SAN ANTONIO – Boerne High’s dream season continues for another week after the Greyhounds stunned Tyler Chapel Hill Friday night in the Alamodome.
BHS shut down the Bulldogs’ high-octane offense, 35-0, to advance to this year’s 4A DI state championship game.
Boerne High (15-0) plays Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, home of the Dallas Cowboys. They’ll face China Spring (14-1) at 3 p.m. for the state title.
Even though he had full confidence in his team, BHS coach Che Hendrix said it’s hard to believe what the Greyhounds accomplished on Friday as they become the first Boerne ISD football team to ever play in a state championship game. The 15 wins is also a district record.
“It’s a dream come true, it’s what you dream about and that’s what you practice for,” he said. “I’m so proud of these guys and this community, it’s unbelievable.”
Boerne moved the ball well on its first drive but an interception stop the Greyhounds at the Bulldogs’ 18-yard line, but BHS punched it in on its next possession.
TJ Dement plowed through the middle of the Chapel Hill defense and scored on a 4-yard run for the 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
It stayed that way until the second stanza when Houston Hendrix caught a pass from Jaxon Baize and found the end zone for a 20-yard score and the 14-0 lead after the Joe Ballenger kick.
The Greyhounds turned the ball over three times in the first half, but it didn’t hurt them as the Bulldogs never capitalized on any of the BHS miscues.
At one point, Chapel Hill took the ball to the Boerne 1-yard line but coughed up the ball near halftime and the Greyhounds took a 14-0 lead into the break.
“It could have been 28-0 or 35-0, but we turned it over,” Coach Hendrix said. “But there was no panic, we weren’t surprised we were winning, they were calm and business-like.”
Chapel Hill played a lot of players on both offense and defense and the Greyhounds appeared to wear them down in the second half with their physical style of play.
Dement tallied two more touchdowns in the third quarter on runs of 82 and 4 yards and finished with three TDs in the game. The 82-yard burst was a one-play drive, while the 4-yard score capped an 8-play drive and the Greyhounds were leading 28-0 with 3:59 left in the third quarter.
“That was the plan, to wear them down and try to run the ball to kill the clock and we did,” Coach Hendrix said.
Late in the third quarter, Charlie Stahl intercepted a Chapel Hill pass to give Boerne the ball at the Bulldogs’ 29-yard line. Nine plays later, as the game went into the fourth quarter, Jaxon Baize found big brother Braden Baize on a 32-yard scoring strike for the 35-0 lead with 7:10 left to basically put the game on ice and give Jaxon Baize his 51st passing TD of the year.
Coach Hendrix said they’ll celebrate the win, but added that they still have work to do.
“I’m sure it’ll dawn on us when we get there (to AT&T Stadium), we’ll celebrate this, this is unbelievable, a great feeling and an unreal accomplishment,” he said. “We’ll get back at it and play one more game.”
