Donna Campbell, a board-certified emergency room physician from New Braunfels, first was elected to the Texas Senate in District 25 in 2012. Ten years later, she is seeking another term, but is being challenged in the March 1 Republican primary by Channon Cain.

Early voting begins on Monday. The winner of the GOP primary will face Democrat Robert Walsh in November.

Senate District 25 serves all Kendall and Comal counties and portions of Bexar, Guadalupe, Hays and Travis counties.

The Star attempted to reach both candidates to gain insight on their priorities and what they would hope to accomplish if elected to serve District 25. Neither candidate responded by The Star’s Friday press deadline. In fairness, the newspaper therefore is providing information gathered from each candidate’s website.

Donna Campbell

Campbell currently serves as the chair of the Senate Nominations Committee and previously served as chair of Senate Veteran Affairs, Border Security and Military Installations for the previous four consecutive legislative sessions. She also has served on five other Senate committees which include Senate Finance, Business and Commerce and Senate Health and Human Services.

During this past legislative session, she was elected by her colleagues in the Senate as president pro tempore. Should the governor and lieutenant governor be out of the state, Campbell will honorably step in and serve as governor of Texas, information states.

Information on her website states Campbell has received top honors for her legislative accomplishments from the NRA, Texas Alliance for Life, Texas Values and the Texas Veterans Commission. She has been recognized as a Top Courageous Conservative three times in a row by the Texas Conservative Coalition and designated as a Fighter for Free Enterprise by the Texas Association of Business.

She describes herself as pro business, pro 2nd Amendment, pro border security, pro life, pro property tax relief and pro veteran and military.

Campbell was born on a naval base and information states she grew up with a “great respect for the military and law enforcement.” Her father served in the U.S. Navy and later as a trooper in the highway patrol. Her mother worked in factories most of her life until studying to become a nurse at the age of 48. Campbell earned her masters of nursing degree from Texas Woman’s University and received her M.D. from Texas Tech University, where she was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the honor society for medical schools.

She completed her residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and was awarded the Morton Award as an outstanding resident in ophthalmology. Campbell calls herself a proud woman of faith and has volunteered with Christian Eye Ministries and performed hundreds of eye surgeries in the West African nation of Ghana. In her spare time, she is an avid hiker and runner.

Channon Cain

On his website, Cain claims he is not a politician, “which is why I am answering this call to leadership and entering the race for Texas Senate, District 25, with a servant’s heart.”

He said he is a sixth-generation Texan with a “profound appreciation” for traditional Texan and American values. Those values, he said, are now, more than ever, under attack.

He said he has an “unwavering belief that our state and nation’s wise and sacred founding principles should continue to guide our great state now and into the future.”

Cain said, if elected, his issues of focus are championing God-given rights and liberties; ensuring a safe, secure and lawful Texas; fighting for children, parents, families and truth; restoring the public’s trust in Texas government; supporting prosperity, opportunity and well-paying jobs; and representing Central Texas and the Texas Hill Country.

“I will stand strong for faith, family and freedom,” he stated on his website. “I am pro-parent, pro-taxpayer, pro-life and pro-2A and sportsmen. I will fight for secure borders, law-and-order, limited government, lower taxes, medical freedom, secure elections, entrepreneurship and free enterprise, farming and ranching, energy independence, reliable infrastructure and electrical grids and top-quality schools that stick to educating, not indoctrinating, our children.”

He also said he opposes political corruption, mandates from unelected government bureaucrats and the cult of “wokeism.”
