Boerne High crushes Calallen, advances to state semis

SAN ANTONIO – The fireworks started early for the Boerne High football team after McCoy Bruce took the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown in Friday’s fourth-round playoff game against Calallen.

SAN ANTONIO – The fireworks started early for the Boerne High football team after McCoy Bruce took the opening kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown in Friday’s fourth-round playoff game against Calallen.

BHS was up 7-0 just 12 seconds into the game and the Greyhound never looked back from there as they went on to whip the Wildcats, 49-19, and advance to the state semifinals.

Boerne High set a BISD record with its 14th win and improves 14-0. They’ll face Chapel Hill in the state semifinals this Friday, 7 p.m., after Chapel Hill beat Kilgore on Friday.

The Greyhounds made it look easy as they dropped 49 points on the Wildcats. Coming into the game, the most points Calallen had given up in a single contest this year was 30 to Alice.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said they played well.

“It’s not easy I promise you, that’s a really good football team,” he said. “Nothing at this time is e a s y, we played well and our kids were dialed in and focused and played a good ball game.”

Boerne bookended Bruce’s 82-yard kickoff return with a defensive TD right before the half after Koen Wolff picked off a Bryce Burnett pass and went 69 yards for a touchdown to help the Hounds take a 42-12 lead into halftime.

Hendrix said those two explosive plays were huge.

“When you get off to a start like that, with a special teams touchdown and a defensive touchdown in a half, things are usually going your way,” Hendrix said. “That touchdown was probably the play of the game by Koen Wolff. That was a killer because if they score, they had a chance to cut into the lead and make it a game.”

For good measure, the Hounds tacked on four more TDS in the first half.

Jaxon Baize hit his brother Braden Baize on touchdown passes of 31 and 53 yards in the first quarter, while Jaxon Baize also connected with Brooks Perez on a 39-yard scoring strike in the second quarter.

Adam Hicks added a 1-yard scoring plunge in the second quarter and Joe Ballenger was good on all six of his extra points.

Once the second half started, Calallen made it interesting after the Wildcats scored on its first possession of the third quarter to make it 42-19.

On Boerne’s first possession of the second half, Calallen picked off a Jaxon Baize pass and had a short field to work with. The Wildcats moved the ball to the BHS 1-yard line and a TD would have made it a two-possession game but Calallen was penalized and then fumbled on the next play.

Boerne’s Will French jumped on the loose ball to turn away the Wildcats and keep it at 42-19.

Calallen picked off another Jaxon Baize pass, this one in the fourth quarter, but again the Greyhound defense didn’t surrender any points as they bent but didn’t break.

Midway through the fourth quarter, TJ Dement busted loose for a long touchdown run to put the game away. Dement took it to the house from 59 yards and the Ballenger kick bumped the score to 49-19 with 6:53 left in the contest.

Calallen had the ball once more and was forced to punt. Boerne took over at its own 9-yard line with 5:31 remaining and managed to get a couple of first downs to kill the clock and then the celebration began.

“We were pretty good and pretty solid,” Hendrix said about his team that handed Calallen its only loss of the year. “We’re trying to be 1-0 this week and we’ll try to do it again on Friday.”
