This Friday’s fourth-round football playoff game between Boerne High and Calallen is a battle of unbeatens.
Both enter the contest at 13-0, and one of their seasons will end Friday, while the other advances to the state semifinals.
Friday’s fourth-round matchup kicks off at historic Alamo Stadium, 7:30 p.m.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said the coaches and players are excited to be in this position.
“We’re thrilled about it, this is the stuff at the beginning of the year that we talk about at the kickoff dinner, this is what you’re hoping for. It’s why you work all summer,” he said. “I don’t think this could be better scripted for either team. It’s a great stadium, hopefully the weather holds but this has all the makings of a huge game.”
Calallen has defeated Beeville Jones (30-6), Davenport (22-14) and Somerset (31-17) through the first three rounds, while the Greyhounds have taken down Taylor (42-13), Pleasanton (50-21) and then knocked off Port Lavaca Calhoun last week (51-0).
Boerne has won its three playoff games by a combined score of 143 to 34 but Hendrix said he isn’t worried about his team not being challenged. The coach noted that the challenge has come in other ways.
“It doesn’t matter what the score is. Can you play at a high-level week in and week out? That’s a challenge and that’s what our guys have done,” Hendrix said. “They’ve played to an incredibly high standard, it doesn’t worry me what the scores have been because of how we’re playing and taking control, that’s all you can ask is to play to our standard and we’ve done that.”
Boerne rolled to 515 yards of total offense last Friday and quarterback Jaxon Baize tossed three more TDs, two to Brooks Perez and another to Braden Baize who leads the team in receiving touchdowns with 17.
TJ Dements ran in two TDs, Houston Hendrix added another and then Michael Igbo closed out the scoring with a 51-yard gallop into the end zone, while Joe Ballenger booted a 36-yard field goal.
Jaxon Baize has now thrown for 46 TDs this year, against only 4 interceptions. The sophomore passed the 3,000-yard mark and has thrown for 3,041 yards.
Defensively, the Greyhounds pitched a shutout, its first of the postseason and only second of the year.
Will French and Weston Klutts both had fumble recoveries and Charlie Stahl intercepted a pass for the BHS defense that only gave up one 1st down and 30 yards by halftime.
Legendary Calallen coach Phil Danaher is retired after almost 500 career wins, the most of any Texas high school football coach, but Coach Hendrix said they’re still the same Calallen team – for the most part.
“Defensively they’re very similar, they’re very physical,” he said. “Offensively, the main thing is they want to run the ball and they want to be more physical, but they’ve changed things up offensively quite a bit. They run the Slot-T, but they can go with four wide and run the spread. They can throw it, but they like to run it down your throat.”
