SAN ANTONIO – Boerne High and Pleasanton met for the second time this year but there was a lot more on the line when the Greyhounds and Eagles clashed at Orem Stadium on the campus of Alamo Heights High School Friday night.

In their first meeting in Boerne, the Hounds clipped the Eagles 41-7, and while Pleasanton has improved a lot since that regular-season game in September, it wasn’t enough to overcome a BHS team that is playing its best football of the season.

The Greyhounds won Friday’s second-round playoff game, 50-21, and advances to the third round where they’ll face Port Lavaca Calhoun Thanksgiving weekend.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said he is thankful to be playing Thanksgiving weekend.

“The saying is ‘you labor on labor day to give thanks on thanksgiving,” he said. “It’s fun and it’s special and we’re looking forward to it.”

Speaking of special, Boerne’s TJ Dement had a great night running the ball. By halftime, Dement had recorded 171 rushing yards on 12 carries and found the end zone three times. He finished the game with 19 rushes for 199 yards unofficially.

Dement hardly played in the second half and had no idea he was that close to the 200-yard mark, but said in the end it didn’t matter as long as the team won.

“The offensive line did their best tonight and went out there and made my job really easy,” he said. “It’s okay (about not getting 200 yards), you can’t be greedy, I’m happy with it.”

Boerne’s offense was a juggernaut as they scored on all five possessions of the first half and totaled 317 total yards by halftime, which allowed them to take a 34-14 lead into the break.

Dement ran for touchdowns on carries of 1, 13 and 75 yards, while the Baize brothers got into the scoring act and tallied the other two first-half touchdowns.

QB Jaxon Baize hit WR Braden Baize on a 41-yarder in the first quarter and then found him on a 21-yard TD pass in the second quarter with less than a minute left in the half.

The Baize-to-Baize connection helped the Greyhounds score on its first possession of the third quarter to open up a 41-14 lead.

A bad snap on Pleasanton’s punt attempt led to a 2-point safety by lineman Braden Bays and BHS was up 43-14 with 57 seconds left in the third.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds scored again when Jaxon Baize threw his fourth touchdown pass of the night and found Houston Hendrix for an 11-yard TD pass to make it 50-14 after the Joe Ballenger extra point.

The Eagles didn’t go down without a fight and scored once more, late in the fourth quarter on a Diego Luna TD pass from Sean Ramos.

Michael Castillo had Pleasanton’s rushing TD and Ramos also tossed a touchdown pass to Riley Mills to round out the Eagles’ scoring.

Boerne (12-0) scored on its first seven possessions of the game and had the ball one last time. They took over for the eighth time with 5:22 left in the game and ran out the clock.

NOTES: The 12 wins by the 2022 squad ties the 2004 team for the most victories by a Greyhound football team, but BHS coach Che Hendrix isn’t worried about that right now. “We’ll worry about records later,” he said.

Boerne defender McCoy Bruce (8) entered Friday’s game against the Eagles with three interceptions in his last two games.
