After a week off, the Boerne High girls basketball returned to the court Tuesday when the Lady Hounds hosted 6A Stevens.
Tuesday’s contest at Greyhound Gym was tight early but Boerne pulled away in the second half to collect the 77-61 victory.
The Lady Hounds outscored the Lady Falcons in the second half by 15 points and won the game by 16 points.
“I was proud of how we responded in the second half, we were sluggish in the first half defensively and missed some assignments but we did a lot better in the second half,” Coach Amy Ruede said.
BHS improves to 2-0 and began play in the SAISD Tournament on Thursday against Eagle Pass Winn. They played the winner of Incarnate Word – Burbank game on Friday.
Stevens shot it well early on in the game and stayed close to the Lady Hounds. Boerne won the first quarter, 15-13, but Stevens outscored them by a point in the second, 20-19, and the BHS lead at the halftime break was only one point, 34-33.
The Lady Hounds started to pull away in the third quarter after they outscored Stevens in the period, 23-16, to open up a 57-49 advantage.
BHS put the game away in the fourth quarter by winning the stanza, 20-12, to collect the 16-point victory.
Boerne went 30 for 50 from the 2-point area for 60 percent shooting to offset an off night from long range where they only hit 3 of 17 shots from 3-point range.
Averi Aaron led the team with 28 points, Jamie Ruede added 22 points and Abby Smith tallied 10 to make it three BHS players in double digits.
Savannah Salinas scored 5, Sushanna Cobb and Mickena Randle netted 4 apiece, while Chloe Donnell and Jenna Ruede chipped in with 2 points apiece.
Aaron made it a double-double with 14 boards, 6 assists, 3 steals and a block, while Smith and Jamie Ruede dished out 5 assists apiece.
