Comfort High continued its girls non-district basketball schedule Tuesday with a road trip to San Antonio.
The Deer visited South San West Campus and emerged with a double-digit win, 34-23, to improve to 2-1 this year.
Comfort began play in Pearsall Tournament that started Thursday and continues through Saturday. The Deer opened against Eagle Pass and also played Our Lady of the Hills on the first day. They challenged Crystal City on Friday to close out round-robin play and began bracket play later that day.
In Tuesday’s contest, the Deer took advantage of a slow start by the Lady Cougars team that didn’t score a point in the opening quarter.
CHS was up 5-0 after one but things started to heat up for both teams after that. The Deer outscored the Lady Cougars, 9-8, in the second and held a 14-8 lead at halftime.
Comfort was consistent in the second half and dropped in 10 points in the third and fourth quarters, while West Campus netted 7 and 8 points over the same time frame to give the Deer the win.
Lula Jaime paced Comfort with 10 points and went 5 for 6 from the field, while Katie Haffner, Bailey Feldman and Emily Rivera all tallied 7 points. Danielle Ruelas hit a 2 pointer and Jael Hernandez sank a free throw to finish with a point.
Rivera, Hernandez and Jaime all collected 5 rebounds each, Haffner grabbed 4 boards, while Hernandez tallied 6 assists and 4 steals. Feldman and Katelyn Cook also came up with 3 steals apiece.
