After last week’s 42-13 thrashing of Taylor in the first round of the 4A-DI playoffs, the Boerne High football team faces a familiar foe in the second round.

The Greyhounds tangle with Pleasanton Friday at Orem Stadium on the campus of Alamo Heights in San Antonio.

Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Friday’s second-round contest.

Boerne and Pleasanton played in the second week of the regular season on Sept. 2, at BISD Stadium and the Greyhounds rolled to a 41-7 victory.

Two and a half months is an eternity in football and while BHS coach Che Hendrix said a lot has changed since that game, he noted that there are still lessons to be learned from looking back at that contest.

“It was pretty early in the year and we’re both similar and both different, but we want to look back at it and see where we did some good things,” he said. “We’ve both changed, but they’re a different team for sure.”

The Greyhounds enter the contest at 11-0, while Pleasanton is 6-5 overall and coming off a 42-20 playoff win over Tuloso-Midway last week in Freer.

BHS has had its share of injuries, but they were also bothered last week by a bit of the flu, however that didn’t stop them from hunting down the Ducks.

“We had a lot of stuff going on last week, it was tough. A lot of guys missed practice and they played sick,” Hendrix said. “But we’ve had a lot better practices this week, we’ve had more energy.”

Hendrix said he was proud of how everyone who suited up responded.

“That shows the depth of our team, and it shows the toughness too, we came ready to play and we just had guys step up to play,” he said. “I’m super proud of them.”

Because their run game was working so well, the Greyhounds only threw 16 passes in last week’s contest against Taylor.

BHS QB Jaxon Baize was efficient and completed 14 of 16 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns, but the Hounds did a lot of damage on the ground with 228 total yards and four scores.

TJ Dement paced the running game with 161 yards on 14 carries and a score. Braden Baize, Houston Hendrix and Bode Brown also tacked on rushing touchdowns.

Braden Baize and Dement caught receiving touchdowns.

“Being balanced and not being one sided is a big deal for us, we ran the ball well and that led to some big passing plays for us,” Coach Hendrix said. “We play each game week by week, but it’s whatever the defense is giving us. Our goal is to get a lead and play from ahead.”

Defensively, in last week’s game with the Ducks, Hutson Hendrix led the team with 10 tackles, Caleb Hamby added 9 stops and Charlie Stahl recorded 8 tackles.

McCoy Bruce had a pick, his third interception in two games, and Houston Hendrix also came up with a pick. Brendan Levada and Braden Bays caused fumbles that were recovered by Houston Hendrix and Stahl.

In Boerne’s first meeting with Pleasanton, the Hounds went up 17-0 before the Eagles scored its only touchdown of the game on a 22-yard pass but the Hounds scored before the break to make it 24-7 at halftime.

From there, BHS tallied two TDs and added a Joe Ballenger field goal, all in the third, to make it 41-7, which is where it stayed after neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

Pleasanton is led by their quarterback Sean Ramos who has completed 58 percent of his passes this year and been selected to play in the San Antonio All-Star game in January.

“He’s a good player for them,” Hendrix said.

One more win and this year’s Greyhound team ties the 2004 group for most wins in a season with 12, but Hendrix said it’s not something they’ve talked about.

“No, not at all,” he answered when asked if he brought up the subject with the team.
