If Friday’s game with Taft is any indication of what kind of season the Boerne Champion boys are going to have this year, then it should be an exciting one.
Champion was in San Antonio on Friday taking on Taft and the Chargers and Raiders were tied at the end of regulation and went to overtime.
In the extra period, Taft was up by four points with seven seconds left but the Chargers found a way to win 60-59 after scoring five straight points.
Champion starts the year at 1-0 after last Friday’s improbable victory. The Chargers were at home Tuesday to host Southwest Legacy before playing in the Harlandale Tournament this weekend.
Last Friday’s game was close throughout, with the Chargers leading 10-9 after one quarter. Champion outscored Taft in the second 16-10 and took a 26-19 lead into the halftime break.
Champion won the third quarter, 13-11, and pulled ahead 39-30 and at one point was up by 10 points, but the Raiders mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter.
Taft doubled up the Chargers in the fourth quarter, 18-9, to tie it 48-48 and send it to OT.
In the extra period, Taft was leading 59-55 with seven seconds left but Braden Baum hit a running 3-pointer for the Chargers to bring them within a point at 59-58. From there, Quinn Grable stole the ball on the inbounds pass and was fouled with 1.6 seconds left.
Grable went to the line and made both free throws to put the Chargers on top 60-59 and give them five points in less than seven seconds.
Taft still had 1.6 seconds to work with but couldn’t do anything with so little time and the Chargers prevailed.
Baum finished with 23 points and made four 3-pointers, Grable added 15 points, Charlie Georgelos netted 8, Dakarai Hodge tallied 7 points in his return to the court, Mason Wyatt netted 5 and Baeden Burdick hit for 2.
Hodge grabbed 9 boards and Baum snagged 8 rebounds and had 3 assists, while Grable also had 3 assists.
