Frances Mae (Engel) Carey
September 9, 1930 – February 6, 2022
Born in Bergheim, Texas, on September 9, 1930, Frances Mae (Engel) Carey passed into her eternal life at her home on February 6, 2022. She was one of five children, three of whom survived infancy, born to Rudolf Engel and Ottilie Kneupper Engel.
Her sister, Estella Eva Engel Rust, brother Stephen William Engel, sister Rita Marie Engel and brother Joseph Engel, all deceased, were surely waiting and welcoming her as she left this life on earth and passed into an eternal life in the love of her Savior, Jesus Christ, and arms of the Father. She is survived by her sister-in law, her cousins and her nieces and nephews, along with their children and grandchildren.
A woman of never-ending faith in God and the salvation promised by Jesus Christ, Frances loved life, her family and friends. A visitation will be held on Monday, February 14, 2022 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Holt & Holt Funeral Home, with a recitation of the Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2022, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Honey Creek Catholic Church with committal to follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
Frances attended the “sister” school at St. Joseph’s Honeycreek in what is now Spring Branch, Texas, and later completed her education as a graduate of Boerne High School’s Class of ’49. Her high school class reunions were always one of her most anticipated and enjoyed events.
After graduating she attended business school in San Antonio and began her career working at Sears. During this time, she met and married Clayton Carey and began an exciting life of multi-state residence and travel, making a long-term home in Redondo Beach, California, and having a 20-plus year career with Hughes Aircraft.
Leaving many life-long friends behind but never forgotten, she and Clayton moved back to Texas in 1978 and became one of the original residents of the newly developing Fair Oaks Ranch. There, they enjoyed the country club life, playing golf and tennis, serving the community through the Lions Club and raising, showing and breeding champion Labrador Retrievers. She was also active with the Boerne Newcomers organization.
She later moved into the city of Boerne and once again began working at Cyclops Electronics, finally retiring in 2005.
Fran was a social person who enjoyed cruises with friends, played in various Bunco clubs, and who at one time bowled in three leagues at the Boerne Turn Verein, traveling often to bowling tournaments in many states with her friends and teammates. She was a legendary bowler and continued bowling until she was 87 when she was sidelined by a hip injury in 2017.
Still, she continued limited social activities and was a familiar attendee at St. Peter’s Church and festivals, St. Joseph’s Honeycreek homecomings, Boerne and Sisterdale volunteer firefighters fundraisers, Pleasant Valley Historic School fundraiser, family parties and reunions, “cousin luncheons,” and Bunco parties. Sadly, many of these remaining activities were eliminated by the COVID-19 pandemic with which disease she was confirmed as infected when she was admitted to the hospital as a result of a stroke.
Special thanks to Susan for being her Aunt Frances’s primary caregiver and silver lining for the past three years. Her selfless, loving care along with the love and support from her neighbors, friends and family, Jennifer, Gladys, Lynette, Renee, Jack, Diane, Judy, Eileen and Wes, Max and Michelle, and Robert and Beth, along with many, many others, provided for continued social interaction during the pandemic and were essential to Fran’s continued residence at her home where she was determined to live out her life.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the staff of Holt & Holt Funeral Home of Boerne. To share words of comfort with the family, please visitwww.holtfh.com.
