The Boerne High girls basketball team charged out of the gate Tuesday in its season opener against Medina Valley.
BHS held an 18-2 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Lady Panthers, 78-34.
Boerne starts the year at 1-0 and is off this weekend. They resume non-district action Tuesday at home against Stevens in its annual Hoops for Heartland game before playing in the SAISD tournament next weekend.
Medina Valley almost went the entire first quarter without a point. Boerne was up 18-0 before the Lady Panthers drew a foul with 12 seconds left before the end of the opening stanza to draw a pair of free throws.
The Lady Panthers sank both foul shots and the first quarter ended with Boerne ahead, 18-2.
Medina Valley hit a few more free throws in the second, but their first basket of the game didn’t occur until the 2:50 mark of the period, a 3-pointer to make it 22-8. Boerne took a 33-14 lead into halftime and the Lady Panthers had only made two 3s, a 2-pointer and the rest came from free throws to get its 14 points.
MV played better after that opening quarter and hit in double digits in the final three periods, but the deficit was too large and they never really made a dent.
Boerne won the third quarter 24-19 and took the final stanza, 21-10.
The Lady Hounds shot 56 percent from the field in the game and were 62 percent from 2-point range and made 7 of 16 3-pointers for 43 percent.
Averi Aaron led the team with 21 points, Jamie Ruede added 15, while Chloe Donnell and Abby Smith netted 11 each to make it four BHS players in double digits.
Taegan King and Savannah Salinas both chipped in with 6, Jenna Ruede had 4, while Liz Fox and Mickena Randle dropped in 2 points apiece.
Aaron grabbed 8 rebounds and Jamie Ruede snagged 6 boards and dished out 10 assists to make it a double- double and also came up with 6 steals.
