Boerne Champion visited Kerrville Tivy for a key district girls basketball game on Saturday afternoon. Both the Lady Chargers and Lady Antlers have earned playoff spots but seeding for the postseason was up for grabs in Saturday’s tussle.
Kerrville Tivy pulled off the 39-38 win after mounting a late rally.
Champion is 25-7 overall and 12-3 in district and slips to third place in 26-5A after Saturday’s loss.
New Braunfels Canyon is in first place at 15-1 and is done with the regular season. Kerrville is 13-2 and in second and Champion is 12-3. Tivy is at Dripping Springs and the Chargers host Johnson on Tuesday so a Tivy loss and a Chargers win could tie Champion and Kerrville for second.
In Saturday’s game, the Lady Antlers put together a late rally after they were down by four points with less than 30 seconds and were trailing by a point with just one second left. Champion had the ball and was inbounding under the Tivy basketball with a second on the clock.
A Kerrville player tipped the ball away from a Charger player, another Tivy player picked up the loose ball, dribbled once and then made a lay up – all in under a second – to hit the game winner at the buzzer and move the Lady Antlers into second place.
Vs. Seguin
Before Saturday’s game, Champion defeated Seguin, 56-21. The Chargers held the Matadors to no points in the first and three in the second for the 26-3 halftime lead.
Kristen Borgerding led the team with 18 points, Kendall Skipper added 12, Khiara Flugence and Madyson Marquard netted 8 apiece, Emily Plank scored 5, Grace Menzies and Adriana Barreiro both hit for 2 and Olivia Keilman made a free throw.
Flugence grabbed 10 rebounds, Borgerding snagged 8 boards, Marquard had 3 assists and Barreiro came up with 4 steals.
