There was bad news and good news for the Comfort football team on Friday night.
The bad news was that the Bobcats were hosting district favorite Poth and lost, 62-14.
The good news was that despite the loss, Comfort qualified for this year’s playoffs after a loss by another team in the district.
Comfort drops to 2-7 overall and is 2-3 in district. The Bobcats close out the regular season Friday in San Antonio when they visit South San West Campus, 7:30 p.m.
In Friday’s game, Poth jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, but the Bobcats tried to fight back and Comfort quarterback Micah Nye put the team on the board in the second period with a 1-yard plunge to make it 20-7.
The Pirates answered with two touchdowns before the half on short runs, the last score coming with just 5 ticks on the clock before the break.
Poth took a 34-7 lead into halftime and then scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to blow the contest open.
A 25-yard scoring TD by the Pirates made it 41-7 and two rushing touchdowns in the period helped Poth build a 55-7 with 2:36 left in the quarter.
Comfort added a 7-yard touchdown run from Sam Tucker early in the fourth to make it 55-14 with 11:14 on the clock.
From there, Poth tacked on one more score on a 1-yard run for the 62-14 lead as the Pirates sailed away with a lopsided win.
