SAN ANTONIO – In just his first year with the Boerne High tennis program, Tyson Stewart has managed to lead the Greyhounds to this year’s 4A state tournament.

Stewart previously coached in the Northside district and said he never came close to advancing a team to state.

“This was not possible at my old school, I was telling the kids that I’ve never been past the second round of the playoffs,” he said. “To go to state in College Station where my dad is tournament director is going to be fun, it’s going to be good memories.”

The 4A state tournament will be held this week in College Station. BHS opened play Wednesday morning in the state semifinals against Little River Academy and the winner of that match plays Thursday at 8 a.m. against the winner of Canyon Randall vs. Lindale for the state title.

In order to get to the state tournament, the Greyhounds defeated Wimberley in the regional finals, 10-3. The day before, the Hounds rolled past Zapata, 10-0.

Boerne High is 19-2 overall entering the tournament, their first appearance at state since 2020 when they won silver after falling in the title match to Hereford, 10-8. They also went in 2016 and lost in the state semis to earn bronze.

Boerne entered the season ranked No. 2 in the state and with a ranking like that comes pressure and Stewart said he had been feeling it lately, especially with the start of the playoffs.

“The kids dealt with it easier than I did. I haven’t slept in about two weeks, or not well,” he said. “The kids handled it well and came out every day ready to play. We talked about it and our goal is to win state.”

Stewart said he brought some changes to the program in his first year and added that the team accepted it and that’s helped them get this far.

“Everyone bought into what I was trying to do, that’s a big part of it,” he said. “We did things a little differently than what’s been done in the past and I did what has worked for me and I’m thankful for that.”
