Jaxon Baize threw six touchdown passes to lead Boerne to its first ever 8-0 start with a 49-7 victory over Kennedy, Friday at Edgewood Veterans Stadium.
Baize threw four of those touchdowns in the first half as Boerne scored 35 unanswered points during that period. Greyhounds running backs Ivan Perez and Bode Brown chipped in running scores during Boerne’s impressive first-half start.
Baize hit Brooks Perez for two of his touchdowns and connected with Braden Baize, Houston Hendrix, Carson Coffland and Caleb Cloutier for his other scores.
Boerne will look to bolster its historic start to its season at Somerset this coming Friday, and Coach Che Hendrix is confident the Greyhounds can keep the momentum going.
“We are going to keep practicing hard and do the things that got us to this point,” he said. “That’s not something we want to give up and take for granted.”
While Boerne was impressive on offense, they were just as potent defensively.
The Greyhounds prevented a Kennedy 4th down conversion at the Rockets’ 14-yard line in the second quarter to set up a Boerne scoring drive, culminating in Jaxon Baize’s touchdown pass to Hendrix at the 3:52 mark. The score gave the Greyhounds a 28-0 advantage.
Four seconds later, Kennedy failed to call a fair catch on a kick return at their 1-yard line, leading to Boerne recovering the ball and scoring on Ivan Perez’s one-yard run.
The Greyhounds made another defensive play six seconds after scoring, recovering a Kennedy fumbled kick return. However, the Rockets fought back, forcing an intercep- tion that led to their only scoring drive of the game – an Estaban Portillo touchdown pass to Joseph Simmons at the 2:42 mark which cut Kennedy’s deficit to 28.
Boerne’s defense continued to ball out in the third quarter as they recovered the football on Kennedy’s botched snap at the Rockets’ 21-yard line. The defensive play set up another Boerne scoring drive – a Jaxon Baize 14-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Perez at the 9:28 mark.
Nearly five minutes later, Jaxon Baize connected with Cloutier for Boerne’s last score of the game.
Coach Hendrix was impressed with the Greyhounds’ focus in the third quarter after they coughed up a score in the last few minutes of the first half.
“We were laser focused, and basically put the game away in the third quarter,” he said. “I am really proud of that concentration in the way we played.”
