The Boerne Champion football team had a hard time getting its offense going on Friday when the Chargers visited district favorite Smithson Valley.

The Rangers did a lot of damage in the first half on its way to a 49-0 win over the Chargers.

Champion drops to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in District 12-5A DI. The Chargers have two more games left in their 2022 season and host Kyle Lehman at Boerne ISD Stadium on Friday for homecoming.

After that, the Chargers close out the regular season in San Antonio at Heroes Stadium against Champion Coach Keith Kaiser’s alma mater, MacArthur.

The Rangers took control with three first-quarter touchdowns and the 21-0 lead. The third SV TD came at the 3:29 mark of the opening period.

Smithson Valley tacked on three more touchdowns in the second quarter to open up a 42-0 lead by the halftime break.

The Rangers scored at the 8:30 mark in the period to make it 28-0. They added another TD at the 5:48 mark of the second for the 35-0 lead. Then, with 1:17 until the break, Smithson Valley punched in another score.

Neither team scored in the third, but the Rangers added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter. Smithson Valley tallied the final TD of the night with 5:12 remaining on the clock to bump its lead to 49-0.

The Chargers couldn’t get on the board Friday, and it’s the first time Champion has been held scoreless since the 2020 season when they lost in a second-round playoff game to Liberty Hill, 41-0, at Gupton Stadium in Cedar Park. It’s only the third time in program history that they’ve been held scoreless. The only other time came in 2012 at Alamo Heights, 24-0.
