SAN ANTONIO – Both the Boerne ISD varsity team tennis programs advanced to the finals in their respective regional tournaments this week.
The Chargers and Greyhounds won Thursday’s semifinals matches and played Friday in the finals.
Champion
The Chargers were playing in the Region IV-5A tournament at Blossom and defeated Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in a tough five-hour match, 11-8.
It was back and forth until the very end as the teams battled it out.
Champion advanced to the regional finals on Friday against Alamo Heights with a state berth on the line. The match against the Mules started at 10 a.m.
To get to the regional tourney, the Chargers defeated Liberty Hill Tuesday in Dripping Springs, 10-6.
Champion is 16-5 after Thursday’s win.
Boerne High
The Greyhounds were playing in the Region IV-4A tournament at the Northside Annemarie Tennis Center and zipped by Zapata, 10-0, to advance to the finals Friday against Wimberley. The match against the Texans started at noon.
To get to the 4A regional tourney, the Greyhounds swept La Vernia on Tuesday, 10-0, after the match was pushed back a day because of the rain.
Counting Thursday’s win, the Greyhounds are 17-2 overall.
UPDATE: The Boerne High tennis team won the region by beating Wimberley and will play at the 4A state tournament next week in College Station. The Champion tennis team fell in the regional finals to Alamo Heights on Friday and ended as the regional runner-up. Both the Chargers and Greyhounds will finish in the top 8 in the state in their respective classifications when the final rankings come out.
