After a week off, the Geneva School of Boerne football team is back in action and will kick off district play this Friday when they host Corpus Christi John Paul II in Boerne, 7 p.m.
The Eagles went 3-4 through non-district and head coach Julius Scott said he felt their rugged schedule has helped prepare them for district.
Geneva played St. Michael’s, Randolph, Austin Regents, Blanco, Shiner St. Paul, Central Catholic and Brentwood Christian.
“I think this schedule will help us down the road,” Scott said.
Corpus Christi John Paul II is struggling and is 1-5 overall with its only win against Lutheran North, 28-14.
In three of their five losses, the Guardians have given up more than 50 points (55, 54, 56).
Scott said his basic rule when facing an opponent is to focus more on his squad and their strengths.
“As a rule, I am only concerned with our team,” he said.
The Eagles used their off week to rest up bumps and bruises and should be getting at least one player back this week who has missed time, Reid Wilson.
Sometimes a team can lose its edge, or their timing may be off after taking a week off and Scott said he hopes that isn’t the case with them.
“Being off for a week can be good and bad,” he said. “I thought we had a good week of practice but then again we have nothing to gauge that by.”
Geneva’s last contest before the bye week was a 42-7 victory over Brentwood Christian. The Eagles ran the ball well against the Bears and tallied 228 yards on the ground on 28 carries and only attempted seven passes all night.
Landon Grimes ran for four touchdowns in that game to pace the offense.
That game with Brentwood Christian was played on a Thursday, Oct. 6, so the Eagles will have two weeks and a day between games. Scott hopes they are rested and ready.
