Comfort High has a renewed focus after the Bobcats football team won its first game of the year last Friday when they hosted Karnes City.
Last Friday’s 38-14 victory by Comfort at home over the Badgers kept the Bobcats in the playoff picture with three games left.
Comfort coach Brandon Easterly said last week’s win energized the team.
“It was awesome for the kids to get to wake up a winner on Saturday,” he said. “I think they are excited about going forward.”
In district, 15-3A DII, Poth, Natalia and Nixon-Smiley all have three wins, while Comfort, Karnes City and Dilley all have one win.
The Bobcats have the tiebreaker over Karnes City by beating them last week and if they can defeat Dilley on Friday, they would also own the tiebreaker against the Wolves as well and have the inside track on the fourth and final playoff spot up for grabs in the district.
Comfort is 1-6 and Dilley enters Friday’s contest at 2-6, but Easterly said the Wolves have a lot of different offensive weapons at their disposal and will be steady defensively when CHS has the ball.
“They are very multi-dimensional on offense and do a really good job of keeping you honest on defense,” he said.
Last Fridays’ win snapped a 15-game losing streak that dated back to last year. Comfort won its 2021 season opener at Brackett and then dropped its next nine games. The Bobcats then lost its first six games this year to take the streak to 15 before snapping the skid last Friday.
Karnes City played well and tallied 399 yards from scrimmage, compared to 324 for the Bobcats but couldn’t score in the second half.
Comfort wore out the Badgers in the final two periods The Bobcats were leading 17-14 at the break and then outscored Karnes City in the second half, 21-0, to pull out the 38-14 win.
Comfort had several explosive plays and had a 69-yard TD reception from Mason West, a 65-yard kickoff return from Jaydin Steward, a 41-yard TD catch from Isaiah Ibarra and an 80-yard touchdown reception from West.
Comfort QB Micah Nye only completed four passes but three went for touchdowns. West had a big day with 177 receiving yards on just three catches and two scores, while Nye tallied 218 passing yards.
