Boerne Champion dominated at last week’s District 26-5A cross country meet held in Seguin.
The Chargers won three of the four races and both varsity squads captured first place and advanced to regionals. The top three teams in each district are headed to regionals scheduled for 5A schools on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in Corpus Christi.
“The kids were really awesome,” Chargers coach Jonathan Tate said.
Varsity Girls
The Lady Chargers won the meet with 41 points to edge Smithson Valley (43) by two points. NB Canyon was third (56), followed by Pieper (108), Kerrville Tivy (110), Seguin (194), Veterans Memorial (216) and Wagner (217).
Elizabeth Leachman, Grace Flores and Josey Whitaker went 2-3-4 after Leachman ran an 18:36, Flores a 19:05 and Whitaker a 19:08.
Kendall Fallon came in 13th with a time of 19:37, Grace Mondini finished 19th in 20:33, Erin Shrader posted a 20:44 for 21stand Kamryn Neer completed the course in a time of 21:47 for 31st place.
“We were down two runners, but we had some people step up,” Tate said.
Varsity Boys
The Champion boys scored 36 points to win the meet, NB Canyon was second (40), Smithson Valley came in third (63), Pieper was fourth (103), Seguin finished fifth (139) and Kerrville Tivy placed sixth (155), while Wagner and Veterans Memorial didn’t field full teams.
Luis Tovar paced the Champion boys team after he recorded a time of 16:10 for second overall, Caleb Dehart came in sixth with a 16:29, Ben Matamoros came in eighth with a 16:45 and Charlie Houck was one spot back in ninth after posting a time of 16:52.
Matthew Duran was 11th after he ran a 17:02, Patrick Thornton came in 14th in 17:23 and Noah Perez rounded out the team after he was 22nd in a time of 18:03.
The Chargers ran well and even surprised their coach.
“I felt like we were third going in, but they just ran great,” Tate said.
JV
Champion won the JV boys division with 21 points and were paced by William Coover and Noah Shelby who went 1-2.
The Lady Chargers tied Pieper with 62 points for second, but the Comal school took second on the tiebreaker or finish of the sixth-place runner, while Champion slipped to third place. Grace Johnson had the Chargers best finish after she was fourth in 21:49.
