Chargers sweep district swim meet, Hounds also compete

SAN ANTONIO – Boerne Champion made it a clean sweep at last week’s District 18-5A swim meet held at the NEISD Aquatic Center.

SAN ANTONIO – Boerne Champion made it a clean sweep at last week’s District 18-5A swim meet held at the NEISD Aquatic Center.

The Chargers boys and girls teams both captured 1st place and edged out Dripping Springs, while the Lady Hounds were 5th and the Greyhound boys were 6th.

The top 6 finishers advance to regionals set for this weekend in College Station and the top 8 earned team points.

Champion tallied 209 points on the boys side and the Lady Chargers scored 176 points for 385 total to also take first in the combined team standings.

BHS was fifth in the combined team standings with 51 points after the Lady Hounds picked up 38 points and the BHS boys earned 13 points.

For the Chargers, Peyton Brehmer was named the girls swimmer of the meet and Gabe Hawkins was named the boys swimmer of the meet, while BISD coach Alberto Escalante was named the boys coach of the meet.

RESULTS (Top 8) 200-medley relay

The Lady Chargers squad consisting of Kate Deykin, Sarah Tolar, Payton Richmond and Emma Seward won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.47, while the BHS squad of Gabrielle Sloan, Kiali Cunningham, Brenna McCarty and Jocelyn Waterhouse was 2nd with a 2:05.46.

In the boys race, Champion’s Gabe Hawkins, Palmer Guerra, Cole Breckenridge and Matthew Jeffery finished 2nd with a 1:41.87.

200-yard freestyle

Emma Seward of CHS was 4th in the race with a 2:05.74, while teammates Madelyn Crosley and Laura Valdes Ranz went 7th and 8th with times of 2:17.03 and 2:20.25. Also, Brenna McCarty of BHS finished 6th in 2:12.68.

In the boys race, Charger Griff Orloff took 1st with a 1:46.13, while teammates Cole Breckenridge and Ethan Roecker were 4th and 7th with times of 1:54.74 and 1:56.14.

200-yard individual medley

In the girls 200 IM, Chargers Kate Deykin was 1st with a 2:09.88, while teammates Lilly Schiffelbein took 3rd in 2:17.38 and Sarah Tolar came in 6th in 2:20.63.

Champion had three place in the boys race after Palmer Guerra took 3rd in 2:08.86, Jake Canales was 6th in 2:12.77 and Roberto Perez Puente came in 7th in 2:22.79.

50-yard freestyle

Peyton Brehmer won the girls 50 free in 24.10, while Charger teammates Paige Clark and Regan Garcia were 3rd and 4th with times of 25.07 and 25.12.

Champion took the top 3 spots in the boys race after Gabe Hawkins, Aleksei Mason and William Tolar went 1-2-3 with times of 21.86, 22.15 and 22.55, while Blake Stewart was 6th in 23.55.

1-meter diving

In the 1-meter diving held the week before, Emma Haines and Colin Breuer both won first place for the Chargers after Haines scored 363.25 points and Breuer tallied 445.50 points.

100-yard butterfly

Audrey Olivo and Payton Richmond of CHS were 2-3 in the 100 fly with times of 1:01.55 and 1:02.82, while teammates Victoria Sperber and Lilly Schiffelbein were 5-6 with times of 1:05.17 and 1:05.52. Boerne’s Kiali Cunningham finished 4th in the race after clocking in at 1:04.

In the boys 100 fly, Chargers Bexon Harrison won the race after posting a 53.85, Brayden Barnhart was 3rd in 56.88, Jace Bredeson finished 5th in 1:00.99 and Emi Martinez-Galarza was 8th in 1:09.92, while BHS’s Carter Schuessler came in 7th with a 1:04.25.

100-yard freestyle

Charger Peyton Brehmer was 1st in 51.99, while teammates Regan Garcia and Paige Clark were 5-6 with times of 55.07 and 55.11.

In the boys 100 free, Champion’s Bexon Harrison won the race with a time of 48.13 and Aleksei Mason was 2nd in 49.30, while teammates Blake Stewart and Grant Coward were 6th and 8th in times of 51.68 and 52.17.

Also, BHS’s Henry Johnson posted a 51.95 for 7th.

500-yard freestyle

Champion had four girls score points in the 500 free after Emma Seward was 4th in 5:27.25, Madelyn Crosley was 6th in 6:08.40, Ana Metz came in 7th in 6:34.99 and Corbin McGee took 8th in 6:38.93.

In the boys 500 free, the Chargers also had four swimmers earn points. Matthew Jeffery was 1st in 4:56.77, Cole Breckenridge took 3rd in 5:12.80, Jake Canales finished 6th in 5:20.49 and Emi Martinez-Galarza was 8th in 6:08.55.

200-yard freestyle relay

The Lady Chargers won the race after Paige Clark, Kate Deykin, Regan Garcia and Peyton Brehmer teamed up for a time of 1:39.52, while Boerne High’s Gabrielle Sloan, Brenna McCarty, Jocelyn Waterhouse and Kiali Cunningham combined for a 1:54.24 for 4th.

The Champion boys relay made up of Gabe Hawkins, Aleksei Mason, Griff Orloff and Bexon Harrison teamed up for a 1:28.25 to win the race.

100-yard backstroke

Kate Deykin finished 3rd in the 100 back with a 1:00.35, while her Charger teammate Kenna Chastain was 7th with a 1:07.81.

In the boys race, Greyhound Henry Johnson captured 1st with a time of 56.67, while Chargers Grant Coward was 3rd in 58.87, William Tolar was 4th in 59.34 and Ethan Roecker finished 6th in 1:00.09.

100-yard breaststroke

Champion’s Sarah Tolar placed 2nd in 1:12.57, BHS’s Kiali Cunningham was 3rd in 1:13.64, while Chargers Victoria Sperber and Payton Richmond were 4th and 5th with times of 1:13.96 and 1:14.58.

Gabe Hawkins of Champion won the boys race in 59.47 and teammate Griff Orloff was 2nd in 1:00.03, while Matthew Jeffery and Palmer Guerra were 4th and 5th with times of 1:03.64 and 1:03.68.

400-yard freestyle relay

The Champion girls team consisting of Paige Clark, Regan Garcia, Emma Seward and Peyton Brehmer combined for 2nd with a time of 3:39.10 and the Chargers boys team made up of Matthew Jeffery, Bexon Harrison, Griff Orloff and Aleksei Mason captured 1st after posting a 3:16.72.
