SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne High football team turned in a solid all-around performance Thursday night when the Greyhounds visited San Antonio for a district game with Memorial.
The heavily favored Greyhounds scored in each of the first three quarters, jumped out to a comfortable lead, let everybody play and eventually collected its seventh straight win.
Boerne High shutout the Minutemen 35-0 and improved to 7-0 for the first time since the 2017 season. The Hounds are 2-0 in district and return to Edgewood Veterans Stadium on Friday to play the other Edgewood school, John F. Kennedy at 7 p.m.
Thursday’s game had an odd feel to it, almost like a scrimmage as the Hounds didn’t rush the punter except for one time, never had a return man back on a punt and in the second half, the game went to a running clock and was over by about 8:45 p.m.
Memorial ran the ball on 39 of its 40 plays and didn’t record a first down until late in the first half with 2:02 left until intermission after five straight punts. The Minutemen finished with five 1st downs in the game, compared to 20 for the Hounds.
Boerne scored on its first two drives and was leading 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Adam Hicks punched it in on a 3-yard run for the 7-0 lead at the 8:12 mark of the first quarter.
On Boerne’s next possession, Jaxon Baize hit a wide-open Houston Hendrix on a 70-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the drive and it was 14-0 after the Joe Ballenger kick midway through the first quarter.
Boerne’s first drive of the second period resulted in a touchdown after Bode Brown capped an 8-play, 74-yard drive that took 3:58 off the clock with a 9-yard TD run for the 21-0 lead after the Ballenger PAT.
Later in the stanza, Brooks Perez caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Baize to wrap up an 88-yard, 8-play drive with 2:52 left in the half and give BHS a 28-0 lead.
Once the third quarter started, the clock rarely stopped, limiting Boerne to just three possessions in the second half. The Hounds fumbled on its first drive of the third period, but the Boerne defense came up with a fumble recovery of its own by Leonardo Arreola to give BHS another possession.
This time the Greyhounds scored after Ivan Perez scrambled in from the 4-yard line. Caleb Cloutier had a nice 42-yard reception from Baize to set up the score.
Boerne only had one more possession in the game after that and punted near midfield on a 4th and 5.
Memorial took over with 3:00 left and ran out the clock to end the game.
