Tuesday’s volleyball match between Geneva School of Boerne and Austin Hill Country Christian turned into a memorable one for Eagles senior Karynn Garrow after she recorded the 2,000th kill of her Geneva career.
Garrow needed 15 kills heading into the match to get the record but wasn’t sure if she was going to reach the milestone early on.
“After the first set I didn’t think I was going to make it because I only had three kills,” Garrow said. “I believed in my setter Ella Grace (Owens) and that she was going to get me the ball to finish it out.”
Sure enough, Garrow finished with 18 kills in the match, but it was her 15th that gave her 2,000 and tied her with former record holder Julie Perez. The 16th one gave Garrow the record all to herself.
“It was crazy, I haven’t experienced a celebration like that since my freshman year when we went to state, so it was crazy getting to relive that,” she said.
Garrow said she entered high school with 2,000 kills on her mind. She was at 1,418 at the start of this year.
“That was my goal since my freshman year,” she said. “It was relief, after four years of pushing towards that goal, finally being able to reach it and being a reality was relief.”
Oh, and by the way, the Eagles won the match, 25-13, 25-13, 25-12. They improved to 21-15 overall and 7-1 in district and qualified for the district postseason tournament which started Thursday at home against Corpus Christi Incarnate Word.
Garrow added that she was happy she broke the record in Boerne in front of the home crowd.
“I’m super glad that I was able to hit it at a home game, that was a blessing because it wouldn’t have been as special at an away game,” she said.
Personal goals aside, Garrow said she and the rest of the Eagles are chasing a team goal.
“Our goal this year is to go to state,” she said. “We haven’t been there since my freshman year when we lost by two points.”
In Tuesday’s match, Garrow tallied 18 kills, 8 digs and 2 aces, Owens finished with 33 assists and 5 aces, Ella Babic added 11 kills, 7 digs and 5 aces, while Lilly Kaiser and Cammy Curtis both totaled 4 kills and Kenzie Cates dropped in 6 aces for the Eagles that had 18 aces in the match.
