Boerne High will be huge favorites entering Thursday’s contest against Memorial, but BHS head football coach Che Hendrix said that doesn’t change anything for his team.
The Greyhounds play the Minutemen Thursday in San Antonio at Edgewood Veterans Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
“We’ll use the same approach and want to play to our standards,” Hendrix said.
Boerne used that approach last week and smashed Uvalde, 62-7, to remain unbeaten this season at 6-0 overall and 1-0 in district.
Memorial is in the opposite situation and is winless at 0-6 and 0-1 this year after the Minutemen lost to Fredericksburg, 36-0, last week to open district.
In fact, Memorial has been shutout four times this year and scored 19 and 7 points in its other two games for 26 total points this year.
In last week’s game with Uvalde, the Greyhounds had more than that, 27 points, in the first quarter alone.
While the BHS offense was rolling, the Greyhound defense came up with four turnovers including a fumble recovery from Peyton Randle, caused by Jeffrey Brown, and interceptions from Houston Hendrix, Hutson Hendrix and Charlie Stahl, with Hutson’s going for a Pick-6 touchdown.
Houston said it was cool that he and his brother had picks and that Hutson’s went for a score. Houston noted that it’s awesome that he gets to play with his brother.
“It’s cool, it sums up our team, we say we’re the brotherhood and it’s cool to see actual brothers playing for each other and getting victories, which is the fun part,” he said.
The Hounds were coming off a bye before the Uvalde game but looked sharp despite have two weeks between games. Houston said he likes how the team is playing but added that they have to keep working, just like his dad and coach said.
“We’re clicking pretty well and that’s where we want to be, clicking for district and playoffs but we have to touch up a few things and be ready for the next game,” Houston said. “We have to play at our level, getting to a tempo early and staying at that tempo in all four quarters. If we can do that, we think we can be pretty dangerous.”
Offensively, Jaxon Baize threw for 5 TDs with scoring strikes to Adam Hicks, Braden Baize, TJ Dement, Zachary Rackler and Caleb Cloutier.
Bode Brown ran for two scores and Hicks added another rushing touchdown, while Hutson Hendrix had the defensive score.
Hutson Hendrix also led the team in tackles with 8, Caleb Hamby had 6 tackles and Will French had 5 stops, while Woody Goen, Stahl and Javier Benavidez all came up with 4 stops.
