The Geneva School of Boerne football team is off this week and won’t resume play until next Friday when the Eagles host Corpus Christi John Paul II in its district opener.
Geneva enters the bye week at 3-4 and has played a challenging non-district schedule. The Eagles played Thursday of last week to close out non-district and defeated Austin Brentwood Christian, 42-7.
Geneva coach Julius Scott said the Eagles were going to rest up over the break. At the Central Catholic game, the Eagles were down to 15 varsity players that suited up.
There were a few JV players that were available if needed, but then the Eagles had to turn around on a short week and visit Brentwood Christian last Thursday on only six days rest.
It didn’t seem to bother the Geneva team that jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter against the Bears thanks to Landon Grimes’ four rushing touchdowns.
George Viña and KP FitzGerald both tacked on rushing touchdowns in the second quarter and the Eagles went up 42-0 by halftime and coasted from there.
Because their ground game was so effective last week, the Eagles didn’t have to throw much and only tallied 66 passing yards, compared to 228 rushing yards for 294 total yards in the contest.
Grimes finished with 114 rushing yards on just 8 carries and 4 TDs and had a run of 48 yards.
Defensively, the Eagles held Brentwood Christian to 101 total yards, with 100 on the ground and just 1 through the air.
The Bears only tallied 2 first downs in the game, compared to 15 for Geneva.
FitzGerald and Viña led the Eagles defensively after Viña had 6 tackles and assisted on 4 others, while FitzGerald had 5 stops and assisted on 3 others.
Gray Bruner and Walker Deimund both added 5 solo tackles and Caeden Sandifer came up with a fumble recovery.
Geneva only has three district games, and they start next week when they host Corpus Christi John Paul II on Oct. 21. The Eagles are home again on Oct. 28 when they welcome Schertz John Paul II and then close out the regular season on the road in San Antonio against Holy Cross on Nov. 4.
