SAN ANTONIO – The Boerne Champion girls opened the 2022 playoffs Monday in San Antonio against Alamo Heights at the Northside Aquatics Center.
The Lady Chargers had tangled with the Mules earlier in the year and Heights earned a lopsided win.
Well, the Lady Mules beat the Lady Chargers again on Monday, 19-8, but it was a lot closer match than in their first meeting.
Champion coach Alberto Escalante said he was proud of their effort and for making the playoffs in their first year.
“We didn’t win today but it’s a victory within itself, we put up a great game. The last time we played them they beat us by a lot, so we put up an even fight and even learned from it,” he said. “They played tough from beginning to end, it was a great season. I’m not disappointed at all, I’m super proud, they played phenomenally well.” The girls end their season at 3-8 overall and only have two seniors listed on the roster in Sarah Tolar and Laura Valdes.
Escalante said the future looks bright.
“We have a very young core, a lot of freshmen and they are hungry to keep playing, so there’s a lot to build off of,” he said. “We’re going to learn a lot going into next year and just have that kind of foundation set.”
The Champion boys opened the playoffs Tuesday against Smithson Valley. For results, look in the weekend Boerne Star.
