Not socialism

“Sticks and stones may break my bones ,but words will never hurt me.” Pretty childish.

The Republican Right of Center column consistently bombards the reader with the fact that Democrats are “socialist.” Far from it. We believe in free enterprise and individualism.

Socialism is a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.

Democratic socialism is a political philosophy that supports political democracy within a socially owned economy, with a particular emphasis on economic democracy, workplace democracy and workers’ self-management within a market socialist economy.

The United States in some areas adheres to a more socially democratic style of government when it is needed. There are just some areas in our society that collectively we can address problems that an individual cannot.

There are some institutions within our economy that can be considered socially democratic institutions. These institutions serve the greater good.

Believe it or not the largest employer in Kendall County is a democratic socialist organization. The entity that I am referring to is owned by the community, for the good of the community. That organization is the Boerne Independent School District.

So are people employed by the school district or serve on the board of the school district socilaist? I think not. You need to be careful how you throw these red meat terms around.

Why not talk about real issues like voting rights. Let’s debate if it is a good idea or not to declare Election Day a national holiday which would give more people an opportunity to vote. Why would the Right oppose this? Instead the Right prefers to gin up fear.
