Boerne High did a lot to honor the community of Uvalde on Friday night at BISD Stadium in the district opener for both teams.

The Greyhounds held a tailgate party for about 100 Uvalde residents, had a 21-second moment of silence, gave the Coyotes an American flag that flew on a military base and had a flyover with T-38 airplanes from Randolph.

Boerne even ran out of the tunnel with a “Uvalde Strong” banner, but that’s where the pleasantries ended. Once the game started, it was all business for the Greyhounds that pummeled the Coyotes, 62-7.

BHS improves to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in District 14-4A DI. The Greyhounds have a short week and play Memorial on Thursday at Edgewood Veterans Stadium in San Antonio as they look to go 7-0 for the first time since the 2017 season.

Boerne scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and never looked back.

BHS coach Che Hendrix said they played well, especially coming off a bye week.

“That’s what I’m ultraproud of: We came out and weren’t sluggish. We were clicking early,” Hendrix said. “I was happy with how focused our players were, I thought that was really the difference.”

Adams Hicks scored Boerne’s first two touchdowns – the first one coming just a minute into the game on a 15-yard run. Later in the opening period, Hicks caught a 5-yard Jaxon Baize pass and fell into the end zone to make it 14-0.

Houston Hendrix intercepted a Coyotes pass and returned it to the Uvalde 13-yard line. Three plays later, Bode Brown ran it in for the 20-0 lead after a missed extra point.

On Uvalde’s next drive, Jeffery Brown stripped the rock from the Coyotes runner and Peyton Randle fell on the loose ball at the 17-yard line to give Boerne another short field.

On Boerne’s next play, Jaxon Baize connected with brother Braden on a 17-yard TD pass, and it was 27-0 after the Joe Ballenger kick.

The Hounds added another TD in the second quarter after the offense had a short field to work with. This drive started at the Coyotes’ 49 and Boerne found the end zone on a 10-play drive to make it 34-0 after Bode Brown ran it in from the 2-yard line.

Five of Boerne’s drives started in Uvalde territory, and the Hounds scored all five times in the game.

In the third quarter, Charlie Stahl picked off a Coyotes pass and Boerne set up shop at the Uvalde 42-yard line. Seven plays later, Jaxon Baize flipped the ball underhanded to T.J. Dement who scored from the 3-yard line to bump the Boerne lead to 41-0 with 7:55 left in the third.

Coach Hendrix started moving players in and out, but the Greyhounds still scored three more times in the game.

Late in the third, Hutson Hendrix intercepted a pass just like his brother in the first half, and Hutson returned it 28 yards for a Pick-6 touchdown to make it 48-0.

Later in the third, Boerne took advantage of one of those short fields and started their drive at the Coyotes’ 28 after a short punt out of the Uvalde end zone.

Jaxon Baize hit Zachary Rackler on a 7-yard pass that went for a score, and Boerne was up 55-0.

The Coyotes finally got on the board in the fourth on a 49-yard pass from Chris Rodriguez to Jonathan Jimenez to make it 55-7, but the Hounds had the final TD of the night.

Caleb Cloutier closed out the scoring after he caught a 54-yard pass from Jaxon Baize, who threw his fifth touchdown pass of the night on the play, for the final of 62-7.

“I was proud of our team. They came out ready to play and were focused,” Coach Hendrix said. “There were some distractions, but I was proud of how laser focused we were.”
