Champion’s rough start to district play continued Friday night in Seguin.
After beginning District 12-5A DI action at 0-2, the Chargers were coming off a bye week and hoping to get on a roll down the stretch in order to help their playoff chances, but the Matadors had other ideas.
Seguin defeated the Chargers at Matadors Stadium, 42-21, and dropped the Chargers to 0-3 in district. Champion, 2-4 overall, looks to get on track Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium when they host Wagner.
Seguin jumped out to a 21-7 lead in Friday’s game, but the Chargers fought back and managed to tie it at 21-21 but wouldn’t score after that.
Colin Ryan had Champion’s first score. Then, Ryan found the end zone again on a wheel route in the corner of the end zone on the pass from Jordan Ballin and it was 21-14.
The Chargers kicked off, and the Matadors had problems fielding the ball and Champion recovered the rock at the Seguin 20-yard line.
Chargers QB Jordan Ballin made the Matadors pay and scrambled in for a touchdown, and it was tied at 21-21 late in the first half. But Seguin managed to take the lead right before intermission.
The Matadors found the end zone and pulled ahead, 28-21, with 1:47 left until the break and never trailed from there.
Seguin tacked on another TD early in the third quarter and built a 35-21 advantage with 10:23 left in the stanza.
The Matadors added to their lead late in the period with another score and doubled up the Chargers 42-21 with 26 seconds remaining in the third.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter and that’s where it ended.
The Chargers are in a tough spot at 0-3 with four left on the schedule because they still have Wagner and Smithson Valley left. After playing Wagner this coming Friday in Boerne, they visit Smithson Valley on Oct. 21.
The Chargers are home on Oct. 28 for homecoming and then close out the regular season against MacArthur on Nov. 3 at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio.
