SAN ANTONIO – By all measures it was a very successful year for the Champion boys and girls water polo teams in their inaugural seasons.

The Champion boys won this year’s district title playing against 6A schools from the Northside district, while the Lady Chargers qualified for the playoffs with a win last Saturday.

Chargers coach Alberto Escalante said he is pleased with how things have gone so far.

“It’s been a great season, the boys had a lot of veteran players, and the girls had a lot of new players that never touched the sport, so for them to come in and solidify a playoff spot is huge,” he said. “Both teams going into the postseason is a phenomenal way to jump into the second part of the season.”

Both Charger teams will open playoff action early next week. The girls play Alamo Heights on Monday at Northside, 5:15 p.m., and the boys are scheduled to tangle with Smithson Valley on Tuesday at Pieper, 5:30 p.m.

Champion closed out the regular season last Saturday at Northside and the boys battered the Rams, 20-6, and the girls mauled Marshall, 15-2.

The Champion boys end the regular season at 10-0 overall and 8-0 in district, while the Lady Chargers finish the regular season at 3-7 overall and 2-6 in district.

Escalante said he never suspected that the boys

would go undefeated.

“Our goal was to make the playoffs and take it one step at a time and as we were winning, we realized that we could shoot for a playoff spot and a district championship. Moving forward we realized we could be an undefeated district champ,” he said. “My expectation is to win and be successful but to say we would have had a perfect record; you couldn’t have paid me enough to believe that. It’s exciting but with that comes more pressure.”
