The defending TAPPS 4A state volleyball champions, Schertz John Paul II, visited Boerne for a match with Geneva School of Boerne on Tuesday and what a match it turned out to be.
Geneva was eager to face the Guardians to test themselves and the match went to five games before the Eagles claimed the 25-23, 17-25, 27-25, 19-25, 15-9 win.
“It was a powerhouse match,” is how Geneva coach Shelly Vaughn described it.
Geneva’s Karynn Garrow tallied 40 kills in the match and is now just 15 kills away from reaching 2,000. The Eagles are off until Tuesday when they host Austin Hill Country Christian in their regular-season finale and Garrow will be aiming for the school record of 2,000 set by Julie Perez.
Last Tuesday’s match was anybody’s for the taking. In that third game, John Paul II was up 22-21 but the Eagles rallied to tie it and then won it, 27-25, to take a 2-1 lead.
The Guardians played well in that fourth set and tied it at 2-2 to send it to Game 5.
In the final set, Geneva rushed out to a 5-1 lead, forcing a Guardians timeout. It worked, to a degree, because JPII went on a 5-1 run to tie it at 6-6. It was tied again at 7s and 9s before the Eagles started to pull away.
Once it was 9-9, Geneva went on a 6-0 spurt to end it as Garrow took over down the stretch.
The senior and DI commit to Grand Canyon University tallied 40 kills, 16 digs, 4 aces, 3 blocks and 3 assists, Kenzie Cates finished with 11 digs, Emily Coultress added 25 digs, Ella Babic had 13 kills, 4 aces and 15 digs, Ella Owens tallied 43 assists and 15 digs and Lilly Kaiser came up with 6 digs.
Geneva improved to 20-5 overall and 6-1 in district with Tuesday’s win.
