District play is finally here for the Boerne High football team. The Greyhounds host Uvalde Friday at BISD Stadium, 7 p.m.
All the teams in District 14-4A DI had last week off, so all will begin league play this Friday.
The Greyhounds are 5-0 through non-district and Uvalde is 3-2.
BHS coach Che Hendrix said they had a productive bye week and added that the team is looking forward to district play.
“We did a mix of everything, we had some good practices,” he said. “(Last) Tuesday we hit, and it was one of our better practices this year. We conditioned them and worked on fitness trying to stay in game shape.”
Hendrix added that the players also went bowling during their bye week to work on team bonding.
“It was fun,” he said. Uvalde used to be a 5A school but dropped down to 4A for the 2020 football season. They were in Boerne’s district for those two years of that alignment (20-21) and will be with them the next two years (22-23).
In their two previous meetings, the Greyhounds won, 30-6 and 54-17, but Hendrix said the Coyotes are doing some good things.
“They’ve got a few things figured out from last year. They’re better overall,” he said. “They’re in Year 2 with their new coaching staff. They play hard and they know what they’re doing.”
The Greyhounds have rolled through non-district and are averaging 42.8 points per game and hit 52 against Gregory-Portland. The BHS defense has held opponents to seven points twice.
Hendrix said the biggest thing he was concerned about over the bye week was keeping their timing.
“I wasn’t concerned about losing the edge, just timing because our timing has been sharp,” he said. “We’re getting back to game speed and want to stay sharp and crisp.”
With the non-district schedule behind them, Hendrix said the timing of the bye week was perfect.
“The bye came at a good time,” he said. “We’re healthy and practices have been really good.”
Hendrix said the key to Friday will be to do what they’ve been doing all along.
“We just have to continue to do what we do and play our style,” he said.
NOTES: The Boerne football team will honor the football team and town of Uvalde after the recent tragedy the community went through. Boerne is hosting a tailgate party for the Uvalde fans at 5 p.m. in the parking lot behind the baseball outfield. As of Monday, about 100 Uvalde residents have indicated they would attend. Also, before the game, there will be a flyover and the Greyhound football team will run onto the field with the Uvalde flag. After the game, the Boerne team will feed the Uvalde players pizza to eat on the trip home.
