After a week off, the Boerne Champion football team will resume district play Friday with a road trip to Seguin to take on the Matadors.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in Seguin.
Champion and Seguin have been in the same district off and on the last several years and Chargers coach Keith Kaiser said this is one of the better Seguin teams they’ve seen.
“They’ve got a couple of running backs and are extremely athletic,” he said. “Last year they had a pretty good group, and a lot of their kids are back. They’ve always had good looking kids, but something was missing, they’re doing a good job now.”
The Matadors enter the contest at 4-1 overall and 2-0 in district, while the Chargers are 2-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Seguin still has the toughest part of its schedule ahead, but Kaiser said they’re confident because they are undefeated in district. He added that the Matadors have a knack for special team’s touchdowns.
“They’ve had something like eight kickoff returns for touchdowns and against Alamo Heights (in their season opener), they had two or three against them,” he said.
Seguin has a freshman quarterback in Corey Dailey and Kaiser said he plays well.
“He manages the game,” the coach said. “He’s not a deep ball thrower, they try to get their guys in space.”
While Kaiser said they’ll focus on stopping the Matadors, especially on special teams, he noted that their biggest problem this year hasn’t been the teams they’ve been facing.
“Our pitfalls have been us, not what our opponent is doing,” he said. We have to get better at what we’re doing.”
Kaiser said they used the off week to heal up from nagging injuries but added that they also worked.
“We took some time to recover, it was good,” he said. “We tried to get our legs under us and have some productive workouts.”
With an 0-2 start in District 12-5A DI and with five games left, Kaiser said the Chargers must win at least four, if not all five to make the playoffs.
But Kaiser added that they’re only playing one week at a time and so he isn’t thinking about the other games. The coach said he and the team are focused strictly on Seguin.
“It’s the final push, here we go,” he said. “We told them this is a big one, we haven’t talked about the rest, let’s go get this one.”
