And, most of that total – 0.32 – accumulated on Monday, the last day of the month.

Precipitation only was recorded on three other days in January with the only significant amount coming on January 8 when 0.15 of an inch fell.

According to the NWS, this January was the third driest this century, trailing only the 0.16 of an inch that accumulated in the first month of 2014 and the 0.54 of an inch that fell in January 2008.

The normal amount of precipitation in Boerne in January is 2.28 inches. The record amount this century is 6.76 inches in 2007.

Last year, 1.61 inches was recorded in January en route to an annual total of 41.51 inches, which was about 15 percent more than an average typical year. However, this January’s precipitation amount followed a December 2021 total of only 0.36 of an inch.

In mid-January, Kendall County Judge Darrel Lux put the burn back in place because of the dry conditions. However, the Cow Creek Groundwater Conservation District still lists the area in Stage 1 drought.

Boerne’s other weather recording station measured 0.90 inches of precipitation in January.

As far as temperatures, the high and low for the month were reached only a day apart as 83 degrees – a record for the day – was recorded on January 2. On January 3, the temperature dipped to 20 degrees, or a swing of 63 degrees over the two days.

The mercury dipped to the freezing mark or below on 17 other days during the month and reached the 20s on 12 days. From January 14-30, the low dropped to freezing or below on 13 of the 17 days.

On the other end, the temperature hit 80 degrees on one other day – January 20 – and made it into the 70s on six others.

On January 21, the high temperature only made it to 33 degrees. On January 1, the low was a warm 64.

For the month, Boerne’s high temperature averaged 61.8 degrees, which is 0.3 degrees warmer than normal. The low, however, averaged 32.8 degrees which is almost 4 degrees colder than the 36.6-degree norm.

The average overall temperature in January in Boerne was 47.3 degrees. The normal is 49.

The weekend forecast calls for a chilly start with highs on Friday expected only to reach the low 30s with an overnight low of about 20 degrees. Conditions are expected to warm a little on Saturday with a forecasted high of 40 and low in the low 20s. On Sunday, the mercury is expected to climb into the low 50s.

There is no precipitation in the short-term forecast.
