A former Roy Maas Youth Alternative Meadowland Campus employee, Shareda Rawls, is being accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student while she was employed at the organization.
Rawls is facing a sexual assault of a child charge and a charge for improper relationship between an educator and student after the teenage boy made an outcry of assault to Boerne police officers in March 2020, court documents stated.
Rawls, who is now 31 years old, was 29 at the time of the alleged assault. Both charges are a second-degree felony with a punishment range of two to 20 years in state prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.
Rawls, of Universal City, is out on a combined $125,000 bond for both charges. She was arrested on March 26, 2020, which was 22 days after the offense was alleged to have taken place.
The student reported the incident to Boerne police officers 20 days after he said the offense occurred, information stated.
The Meadowland campus facility is located at 121 Old San Antonio Road. According to the its website, it is intended for at-risk youth and offers counseling and a structured environment to help nurture students’ success, “giving children and families the tools to end the cycle of abuse.” The Meadowland school is part of the Roy Maas Youth Alternatives campus.
It is not affiliated with the Boerne Independent School District.
“RMYA (Roy Maas Youth Alternatives) is committed to caring for children and families in crisis,” The Meadowland website reads. “Since 1976, we have provided services to abused, neglected, and high-risk youth through residential and counseling services many of which are offered on a sliding scale to low-income families in our community. Children come to us from the Texas Department of Family & Protective Services, the city of San Antonio, Family and Youth Service Bureau as well as various county juvenile probation offices. Our services help children navigate through the trauma of physical and sexual abuse, abandonment and neglect they have experienced.”
Rawls appeared before the 451st District Court last week with a final pretrial date on the docket, but a continuance was filed by the defense and granted. Her next setting is now scheduled for May 13 with a trial date set for May 23.
“Roy Maas Youth Alternatives (RMYA) is built on a foundation of respect, integrity, and trust,” an official statement from the organization sent to The Star on Wednesday afternoon stated “We are committed to creating and fostering an environment for our employees and the youth who live at our facilities that promotes integrity and safety.
“Human Resources policy prevents RMYA from commenting on personnel matters. We want to make clear that all cases of alleged misconduct, harassment or discrimination are investigated and reported to law enforcement and the proper administrative authorities.”
