The Geneva School of Boerne continued its rugged schedule Friday when the Eagles hosted Central Catholic and DI commit Braeden Flowers.
Geneva held the 6-foot-4, 245-pound Flowers in check for the most part but the Buttons had enough players around him step up to make plays and that proved to be the difference.
Central Catholic recorded the 20-7 win over the Eagles to drop Geneva to 2-4 overall. Geneva will visit Brentwood Christian on Thursday to close out non-district.
Eagles coach Julius Scott said his team played the Buttons well and added that he hopes the tough non-district schedule they are playing will get them ready for district play that starts on Oct. 21.
“There will be some time down the road, when I think this will pay off. I think it’s coming, and I think you might see a difference,” he said. “Games like this will have served its purpose.”
Geneva had a chance to score on its opening drive and pushed the ball down to the Buttons 1-yard line. They had a 1st and goal from there, but couldn’t punch it in. They went for it on fourth down and didn’t score.
“We had the ball at the 1-yard line, and we couldn’t get the ball in the end zone for some reason,” Scott said. “You have to avoid negatives and execute.”
Central Catholic took over, but later in the drive, Luke Kaiser intercepted a Buttons pass and gave Geneva the ball back at the 43.
But the Buttons turned away the Eagles with an interception of their own, killing two Geneva drives in Central Catholic territory.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Buttons got on the board in the second period when Flowers caught a short pass from quarterback Ryan Perez, and it was 7-0.
Geneva answered on its next drive and capped a 13-play, 74-yard march down the field. Jacob Rosenstiel finished the drive with a 6-yard scramble into the end zone and it was tied at 7-7.
The tie didn’t hold for very long after Central Catholic responded on the ensuing kickoff with a drive that resulted in a touchdown for the Buttons.
Perez threw his second TD pass of the night, this time to Gary Mejia, and it was 14-7.
After a fumble recovery by the Buttons, Central Catholic attempted a 49-yard field goal that missed, and it stayed 14-7 at the break.
Hayden Allen came up with an interception for the Eagles on the Buttons’ opening drive of the second half, but the Geneva drive stalled after they went for it on 4th and 5 at the 28 and didn’t get a first down. That happened to the Eagles four times in the game where they went for it on 4th down and didn’t score or convert a first down.
Central Catholic had a couple of chances to build on its lead but a defensive stand by the Eagles stopped one of their drives. Hayden Allen made a touchdown-saving tackle inside the Geneva 1-yard line to keep it at 14-7.
The Eagles couldn’t do much on the drive and had to punt from their own 1-yard line, giving Central Catholic another short field but the Buttons missed a 40-yard field goal after a bad snap.
Central Catholic finally put the game away with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The Buttons had been running the ball to kill clock and make Geneva burn timeouts, but Central Catholic threw a surprise pass that Michael Mayhugh caught from Perez and took to the end zone from the 29-yard line for the 20-7 lead after the missed extra point.
Geneva still had 1:51 left to work with but a turnover ended the drive and gave the ball back to the Buttons with only 28 ticks on the clock.
Central Catholic tried to score and ran the ball down to the Geneva 1-yard line but then sat on the ball to end the game.
