That first win of the season just keeps eluding the Comfort football team.

The Bobcats visited Natalia and held leads of 14-0 and 20-6 against the Mustangs but just couldn’t finish. Natalia came back to record the 42-27 win over the Cats Friday in Natalia.

Comfort remains winless and slips to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in district. CHS is off this coming Friday and resumes district play on Oct. 14 at home against Karnes City.

Mason West had a great game and helped the Cats jump out of the gate with a 14-0 lead. West returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for the quick 7-0 lead just 13 seconds into the contest.

An interception on a Natalia drive by Lito Lopez set up Comfort’s next score. West found the end zone on a 7-yard jaunt and the Cats were up 14-0 barely four minutes into the game.

After Natalia cut into the Comfort lead with a 60-yard touchdown pass, the Bobcats responded. CHS quarterback Micah Nye galloped in for a touchdown from 70 yards early in the second and Comfort was up 20-7.

But the Mustangs ended the first half by tying it up. Natalia finished two drives with short touchdown runs, the last coming with just 38 seconds on the clock before the break and it was knotted up at 20-20 at intermission.

Nobody scored early in the second half, but late in the third quarter, Natalia took its first lead of the game on a 4-yard run and it was 26-20 after a missed extra point.

Just like on the opening kickoff, West returned another kickoff for a score. West went 73 yards on this return and Comfort pulled ahead, 27-26, with 3:09 left in the third quarter, but those would be Comfort’s final points of the game.

Natalia tacked on another rushing touchdown late in the third and jumped back on top at 34-27.

From there, the Mustangs iced the game with a fourth-quarter score and opened up a 42-27 advantage with 8:20 left and held on from there.

Comfort turned in some good numbers despite the loss after Nye finished with 133 rushing yards on 14 carries, while Topper Sterling added 53 yards on 14 totes.

Nye completed six of his 16 attempts and Sam Tucker led the Comfort receivers with 5 catches that went for 21 yards.

Mason West had kickoff returns of 89 and 73 yards that both went for touchdowns, and he also had a rushing touchdown to account for three of their scores.

After a bye week, the Cats have four games left in the regular season and will need to get busy if they are going to make the postseason.

Comfort hosts Karnes City on Oct. 14, visits Dilley on Oct. 21, hosts Poth at home on Oct. 28 and then closes out the regular season at South San West Campus on Nov. 4.
