The Boerne Champion volleyball team suffered a tough loss to Smithson Valley at Charger Gym on Tuesday night.
It was tough in more ways than one way after the Lady Rangers (5-1) won the match in four sets, 25-22, 18-25, 25-19, 27-25, to pull ahead of the Lady Chargers (4-2) in the district race. Both are chasing NB Canyon (6-0).
Champion is 26-7 overall and continued district play Friday at Kerrville Tivy to close out the first round. They open second-round play Tuesday at Veterans Memorial.
It was also a tough loss because Champion’s senior standout Emma Wegleitner suffered an injury and isn’t expected back this season.
Wegleitner went down in Tuesday’s third game and the Lady Chargers battled without her.
“They played well, they didn’t give up, they fought,” Chargers coach Jessica Tully-Mitchell said. “They left it all on the court. I was proud, I wasn’t upset about any part of it. Smithson Valley is a good team.”
The Chargers really did battle and tied the Rangers at 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25 in that fourth set before Smithson Valley scored the final two points to clinch it and keep it from going to a fifth game.
Tully-Mitchell said she knows the other teams in the district aren’t going to let up on them just because they’re down a player.
“We’ll figure it out, you just have to roll with it. We have to adapt and overcome,” she said. “We have a good team, with great chemistry and girls have to step up.”
Wegleitner and Raylynn Pitts tied for team-high honors in kills with 11 each, Izzy Maszak finished with 18 assists and 5 digs, while Erin Fallon added 20 assists and 6 digs.
Kelsey Rogers dropped in 2 service aces and had 5 blocks, Sadie Hoyt finished with 12 digs, Gabriela Rossello also totaled 12 digs and Emmy Koke had 3 blocks.
