In his five years as the head football coach at Boerne High, Che Hendrix has had the same approach whenever his team enters a bye week.
Hendrix has always maintained that it’s a bye week and not an off week.
So, the fact that the Greyhounds aren’t playing this weekend doesn’t mean they aren’t going to work. They’ll get a little bit of a break, but Hendrix said they don’t want to lose their edge on the eve of district play.
The Greyhounds host Uvalde on Oct. 7 to open 14-4A I action.
“We’re still going to practice. We’re going to be smart, but we’ll do some conditioning and probably bang on Tuesday,” he said. “We’re in good shape and don’t want to lose that. We want to keep our timing and keep playing at a high level and at a good pace. We’ll get some work in and be ready for Uvalde.
“We’ll do some team bonding and have a little fun too,” he added.
At 5-0, the Hounds are playing some pretty good football, but Hendrix said the fact that they’re undefeated doesn’t come as a surprise to him and added that they want to get better.
“We like this team and we’ve had a great offseason. When you put in the work and conditioning, you expect to win and we do. We expected to be in this position,” he said. “I’m happy with where we are but I’m happy that we still have room for improvement and our players have a growth mindset. We don’t feel like we’ve arrived and we can mail it in the rest of the way.”
Hendrix said the bye is coming at a good time for his team. They’ve played all five non-district games, will get a break and begin league play after the off weekend and resume play on Oct. 7.
“The schedule worked out perfect this year,” he said. “We played five weeks and then got a bye week; you really need it after five weeks.”
Despite being 5-0, Hendrix said there are still areas to work on.
“We have to finetune our passing game and our run game and blocking,” he said. “Defensively, we have to continue to work on tackling. We just have to continue to work on our pass rush and fill gaps. There’s still a lot to work on. We’re in a good spot but we have a lot of room to grow.”
