The Boerne High football team put on quite a show Friday night at BISD Stadium hosting Salado for the 2022 homecoming game.
Boerne clipped the visiting Eagles, 41-7, before the largest crowd at a BHS football game this year so far.
The Greyhounds wrapped up non-district play with a perfect 5-0 record and will be off this Friday. They open district play at home against Uvalde Oct. 7.
Boerne coach Che Hendrix said he was proud of the community for its show of support. The student section sold out, and they had to put fans in the end zone seating.
“What an unbelievable crowd, that was so much fun. To see the student section sold out and people in the end zone,” he said. “We have such a great community and great support. You could feel the energy. That was awesome, and we played good enough to win, and everybody got in and got to play at homecoming.”
Friday’s game started out as a defensive struggle and was scoreless until late in the first quarter when the Greyhounds got on the board with a Caleb Cloutier TD catch from Jaxon Baize for the 7-0 lead at the end of the quarter after the Joe Ballenger kick.
Boerne’s defense kept the Eagles pinned deep on their end of the field for most of the first half, which gave the BHS offense good field position most of the night.
Salado did a good job defending the short field in the first quarter, but Boerne overpowered them in the second quarter and tallied three touchdowns.
Early in the period, Jaxon Baize hit brother Braden Baize on a 21-yard pass for a score. Then, Adam Hicks ran it in from the 2-yard line, and Hutson Hendrix scored on a short pass from Jaxon Baize. It was 28-0 after the Greyhounds scored three TDs in seven minutes.
The first score of the quarter was set up by a Houston Hendrix interception – one of three turnovers he came up with on the night.
Salado scored on its first possession in the second half to make it 28-7 and then tried an onside kick that didn’t work, giving Boerne another short field.
The Hounds scored in just two plays after Bode Brown ran it 44 yards. It was 35-7. Boerne executed an onside kick of its own and recovered. Two plays later, Brooks Perez caught a pass from Jaxon Baize, and it was 41-7.
Boerne scored two touchdowns in four plays in two drives that took a combined 1:12, and the rout was on.
Neither team scored in the fourth as Coach Hendrix was moving players in and out and letting everybody see the field.
“I was proud of our effort. It was a great way to finish up this part of the season,” Hendrix said. “Now we have to regroup and get ready for district.”
