Geneva went on the road and picked up a victory against a very good Shiner St. Paul Catholic, 35-12.
It’s the first road win of the year for the Eagles and snaps a three-game skid. Geneva improves to 3-2 overall and hosts Central Catholic on Friday as they continue non-district play.
The Cardinals are the four-time defending TAPPS state champs, but the Eagles were the better bird on Friday.
Geneva jumped on Shiner St. Paul early and built a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.
KP FitzGerald ran the ball in from the 10-yard line for Geneva’s first score, and later in the stanza, the Eagles added a passing touchdown in the period after Jacob Rosenstiel hit George Viña on a 21-yard pass and catch to open up a 14-0 lead after the Walter Cone kicks.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Cardinals tallied the first TD of the second half to make it 14-6 after a failed two-point try but Geneva closed out the quarter with a pair of touchdowns.
Rosenstiel punched it in from the 1-yard line. Then, Landon Grimes scrambled in from 3 yards, and Geneva built a 28-6 lead by the time the game went to the fourth quarter.
Hayden Allen added to the Geneva lead after he caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Rosenstiel, and the score ballooned to 35-6 in favor of the Eagles.
The Cardinals fought to the end and scored on a 35-yard run in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late as the Eagles secured the 35-12 victory.
FitzGerald had a good night running the ball and carried the rock 13 times for 114 yards and a score.
