Tuesday night turned into a pretty good night for the Boerne High volleyball team for a couple of reasons.

First, the Lady Greyhounds defeated Wimberley for the first time in a few years, and secondly, one of the BHS players reached a personal milestone. Boerne’s 25-14, 25-23, 15-25, 28-28 win is the first over the Lady Texans since 2019, and Tori Adams recorded the 1,000th kill of her varsity high school career.

Tuesday’s win improves the Lady Hounds to 18-10 overall and 2-1 in district. Boerne was back in action Friday for another tough match, this time with Navarro.

BHS coach Tisha Pettibon said she was happy for her team and for Adams.

“I’m happy for our girls, they really have come together and stepped up as a team and executed the game plan. They fought for every point; we were down in the fourth set, but they never gave up. I’m proud of their heart and fight and effort,” she said. “I was excited for Tori, she needed five (kills entering the match), so we knew she was going to get it. The stands went crazy when she got her 1,000th kill. It was perfect, you can’t plan that any better.”

Boerne won the first two sets, but Wimberley avoided the sweep and took Game 3. The Texans were up big in that fourth set, but the Lady Hounds fought back and tied it.

In that fourth set, Wimberley was leading 23-18 but BHS scored three straight to make it 23-21, forcing the Texans to take a timeout. Wimberley tallied the next point and pulled ahead 24-21 and was a point away from forcing a fifth set.

But Boerne scored the next three to tie it at 24-24 and then it was knotted up at 25-25 and 26-26, but in both cases, Wimberley had the serve but committed unforced errors and served it long.

“When the set gets tight, we knew they were going to serve long, so I told the girls to just let it go,” Pettibon said. “It’s loud in the gym but I was screaming to let it go.”

After Wimberley’s last service error gave BHS a 27-26 lead, Boerne served and the Texans were called for an attack- line violation, meaning a player on the back row hit from inside the 10-foot line to end the match and give Boerne the win.

Pettibon gave all the credit to the girls.

“They deserve it. It has nothing to do with me,” she said. “They deserve it.”

NOTES: Wimberley has been to the state volleyball tournament 10 times and won six state titles. Besides winning on Tuesday against the Lady Texans, Boerne beat them in 2018 and 2019, but the last win before those two was probably 2012 in an epic playoff battle in Blanco.
