BOERNE — The Boerne Star has a new managing editor, but he’s certainly not new to the paper nor the community.
Zachary-Taylor Wright is now helming the 116-year-old publication, moving up from government reporter to his new role. He took over Sept. 16.
Wright said he’s dedicated to continuing the tradition of quality local news coverage that readers have come to expect, but he also wants to take the paper in new directions that embrace emerging platforms.
In September, The Star moved to an e-edition only on Wednesdays and a weekend print paper that includes high school football.
Wright, a Boerne native, started with The Star two years ago covering government and crime, including local sheriffs’ and police departments, state district court, Kendall County commissioners, area city councils and associated municipal committees and boards.
“Being from here, it’s been really rewarding to serve the community I’m so proud to call myself a part of,” Wright said. After attending Champion High School in its second year of existence – notably being part of the last ninth-grade classes attending the Boerne Independent School District’s two middle schools – he discovered his love for journalism at San Antonio College.
While at SAC, he worked for The Ranger where he garnered several regional, state and national awards.
Returning to Boerne, Wright immediately approached The Star, where he has been working ever since.
Coworkers said Wright is up to the challenge of chronicling the growing community of Boerne, which today is seeing a steady influx of new residents and businesses.
'Zach is going to make a great managing editor. We have the utmost faith in him,' said Thomas Edwards, executive editor of The Star's parent company, Granite Media Partners Inc. 'Not only is he an incredibly talented journalist who has covered so many different subjects in Boerne, he also has deep ties to the city and an understanding of Boerne's history and culture.'
Readers and residents likely have seen Wright around town — he’s hard to miss a 6-foot-6-inches.
But in spite of his towering stature, Wright’s affable demeanor has him encouraging readers to stop by The Star’s office at 941 N. School St. and say, “Hello.” He can also be reached by calling 830-249-2241 or emailing zachary.wright@ boernestar.com.
