It’s homecoming week for the Boerne High football team and the Greyhounds are looking to improve to 5-0 for the first time since the 2017 season.
The Greyhounds host Salado on Friday at Boerne ISD Stadium for Homecoming 2022 with kickoff at 7 p.m.
Boerne coach Che Hendrix said he and the rest of the team are excited about homecoming and added that it’s never been a distraction for the players and they’ve always been able to focus on the game.
“I haven’t had to worry about it,” he said. “I love having the parade Monday, it’s fun to see the community and it happens early in the week so the rest of the week it’s just a football week.”
Boerne High is 4-0 after beating Gregory-Portland on the road last Friday in the Corpus Christi area, 52-27. Salado is 2-2 and beat Fredericksburg (53-17) and Rudder (38-28) to start the season but has dropped its last two to Malakoff in overtime (29-27) and to Little River Academy last week (37-15).
The Hounds have defeated Flour Bluff (35-32), Pleasanton (41-7), Antonian (45-34) and then bumped Gregory-Portland last Friday.
The Wildcats scored first in last week’s game and took a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest but the Greyhounds scored four straight touchdowns to end the first half with a 28-7 advantage.
Joe Ballenger kicked a field goal early in the third and BHS was up 31-7 and never looked back. Boerne scored 24 second-half points and the Wildcats fought hard and tallied 20 points but the Hounds were always up by at least three scores in the second half.
Boerne’s depth was on display as eight different receivers caught at least one pass and two different runners tallied at least 84 yards from scrimmage.
TJ Dement led the Boerne receivers with 122 yards on seven catches and two touchdowns, while Braden Baize and Brooks Perez both caught TD passes from Jaxon Baize.
Bode Brown ran for 107 yards on 14 carries and scored a touchdown, while Adam Hicks rushed for 84 yards on 20 totes and found the end zone twice.
“We had a lot of guys ripping off big plays and making plays,” Hendrix said.
The coach said that Salado is young but talented.
“They’ve kind of had an up and down season. They’re young but have a really big quarterback and a good receiver and running back,” he said. “They’re a good team with good players and good schemes and want to throw it.”
Salado quarterback Luke Law is 6-foot-6 and has thrown for 1,044 yards already this year.
“He’s not real mobile but he throws the ball well,” Hendrix said. “We have to put a pass rush on them and we have to keep them in front of us and tackle.”
Offensively, Hendrix said they have to do what they’ve been doing all year and stay balanced. In last week’s game, Boerne had 303 yards through the air and 212 on the ground.
“We just have to take what the defense gives us,” he said.
As far as improving to 5-0, Hendrix said they haven’t even discussed it because their main goal is to continue to get better as they close out non-district and go into their bye week.
“We haven’t even brought it up, but we’re excited to be 4-0 because we’ve played four good teams,” he said. “That’s the challenge of football is being happy and moving on and being able to focus.”
