The Boerne Champion volleyball team was hoping to make a statement last Friday when the Lady Chargers visited New Braunfels Canyon in a battle of state-ranked teams, but the Cougararettes were too strong and won in straight sets.
No. 6 state-ranked Canyon swept No. 11 Boerne Champion in the district showdown, 25-18, 25-17, 25-13 in the Cougar Den in New Braunfels.
The Lady Chargers suffer their first district loss of the year and slip to 2-1 in 26-5A. Champion is 24-6 overall and was on the road Tuesday for a district match at Wagner before returning home Friday for a tussle with Pieper.
Champion coach Jessica Tully-Mitchell said she knew NB Canyon would be tough.
“They’re always going to be strong and deep,” she said.
For the Chargers in Friday’s match, Emma Wegleitner had 10 kills, Kelsey Rogers added 8 kills, Raylynn Pitts chipped in with 4 kills and Ella Coleman had 3 kills and Emmy Koke 2 kills.Erin Fallon, Izzy Maszak and Rogers all dropped in one ace, Maszak finished with 17 assists, Fallon tallied 9 assists, Gabbie Rossello led the team in digs with 10, while Wegleitner and Sadie Hoyt both had 9 digs and Fallon came up with 8 digs.
