Book & Arts Festival takes off in October

I’ve been reading many inspirational books over the last couple of years – both fiction and non-fiction. The most recent book I’ve read is “Making Space for Women: Stories from Trailblazing Women of NASA’s Johnson Space Center” edited by Jennifer M. Ross-Nazzal and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book is a goldmine filled with stories by many trailblazing women, going back 40 years or more to NASA’s beginnings. It includes the stories of women astronauts, flight controllers, administrative support and much more

It includes the stories of women astronauts, flight controllers, administrative support and much more.

Jennifer Ross-Nazzal is the historian for the NASA Johnson Space Center and has worked diligently to put together this inspiring collection of perspectives. Jennifer and three of the women featured in the book will help kickoff our Boerne Book & Arts Festival on Saturday, October 1, at 10 a.m. at Boerne’s Main Plaza.

Astronaut Eileen Collins, flight controller Ginger Kerrick and administrator Estelle Gillette will all be part of our panel discussion titled “Women and the Space Program.” Amy Bean, who is the daughter of astronaut Alan Bean, will moderate this important discussion.

After the discussion, the featured writers on this panel will be available to sign copies of the book. Collins will also be signing copies of her memoir “Through the Glass Ceiling to the Stars.”

“Women and the Space Program” is just the beginning of a fun-filled day at the Boerne Book & Arts Festival. We’ll also have authors talking about water conservation, our area rivers and fishing.

Authors Sarah Bird and James Wade will be on hand for two different programs, and we’ll have a program on “Myths and Mysteries in the Lone Star State.” Kids of all ages can enjoy programs on ballet, an entertaining program by beloved poet and author Carmen Tafolla, and a western-themed program by author Chris Mullens. There will be activities for kids courtesy of The Book Fairy and H-E-B. Please check out our full schedule at www. boernebookfest.com The festival is free and open to the public.

The Boerne Book & Arts Festival could not take place at all without the help of our generous sponsors. Kay and Bryden Moon have sponsored the book festival last year and this year. They not only give us monetary support, but they also give us about every kind of support you can think of.

Bryden Moon contributes many of the ideas for the festival each year and both Bryden and Kay are always on hand for emotional support for the two zany organizers of the festival. Frost Bank, H-E-B and Bandera Electric have been supporters of the festival for several years.

And we are fortunate to have additional support by the following: The Friends of the Boerne Public Library, The Boerne Public Library Foundation, Hill Country Mile, Bending Branch Winery and The Deckle Edge.
