This past August, the Nest Nature School welcomed three classrooms full of excited 3- to 5-year-olds when the school opened its new campus at Herff Farm. As The Nest begins the enrollment season for the 2022-23 school year, the school will be opening its doors and hosting an open house on Saturday, February 5, to help interested families and community members get to know the school and its unique program a little better.
At the Nest Nature School, we are nurturing strong bodies, inquisitive minds and wild hearts. The school has a cohesive learning community among all of the classes and employs best practices from several early childhood educational approaches. The children learn through play on the extensive nature-rich campus, which presents many opportunities for expanding critical reasoning, collaboration and creative thought for young children.
The distinctive campus is an integral aspect of the school, and as the preschool of the Cibolo Center of Conservation the curriculum and campus prioritize abundant nature-based opportunities to support the school’s playbased learning philosophy. The students have access to more than 60 acres of pristine natural spaces along the Cibolo Creek, including prairies, trails, forests and gardens.
Each class is situated in an individual learning cottage, complete with beautiful indoor spaces, an open-air creative space and picnic decks for mealtimes. The outdoor learning spaces include opportunities for students to grow vegetables, explore the forest, experience a sensory garden, create, build naturebased art, and, of course, slide, climb and jump.
The school prioritizes the highest quality prekindergarten standards through a robust curriculum with academic domains including pre-literacy, math, science, language, music and art to support whole child development in the immersive natural environment of Herff Farm. The curriculum incorporates play and learning in nature to best support our students academically, socially, emotionally and physically to ensure that they are prepared for Kindergarten and beyond.
The Nest will host the open house on February 5 from 9 a.m. to noon. Prospective families and community members are invited to tour the campus, explore Herff farm and meet staff members. Families are encouraged to RSVP for the event where they can also sign up for a guided Information session and tour. Visitors also are invited to extend their exploration of Herff Farm by attending the Farmers Market which takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
