Both the Boerne Champion soccer teams played Dripping Springs Tuesday night in district contests, with the girls at home and the boys on the road.
The Tigers managed to sweep the Chargers and hand both Champion teams their first district losses.
Girls
Drip entered Tuesday’s contest ranked No. 1 in the state in 5A according to the Texas Girls Coaches Association poll and they were able to hand the Champion girls team its first loss of the season.
The Tigers converted one goal in each half for the 2-0 victory. Champion slips to 4-1-2 and 1-1 in 26-5A after dropping its home opener. They’ll look to bounce back Friday at Alamo Heights.
The Chargers had chances to convert but couldn’t against an athletic Drip team.
Coach Kara Walters said she knew it would be two very good teams going at it.
“We weren’t going to go in afraid but with a lot of respect for the players and the team that they have,” she said. “But we knew that we were also bringing a lot to the table and hoped to have a better result.”
The Tigers were able to keep the ball on the Chargers side of the field more often than not and limited Champion’s opportunities.
“We needed to connect one more pass, sometimes it was just one more pass,” Walters said. “When we had the oppor tunities, we were trying to force it so we need to be a little more patient and to possess the ball better.”
On the bright side, Champion still has 14 more matches to go in district and they’ll face the Tigers at least one more time.
“I told the girls that we haven’t lost anything,” Walters said. “We still have that opportunity in front of us with a second-round match against them, and the possibility a third match in the playoffs.”
Boys
Champion visited Dripping Springs and were tripped up by the Tigers, 5-1.
The Chargers slip to 2-2-2 overall and 1-1 in district. They host Alamo Heights Friday at 7:15 p.m.
